The cosmic history of Marvel’s First Family is expanding once again, and this time the spotlight turns to one of Galactus’ most tragic heralds. Marvel Comics has revealed Fantastic Four: First Foes – Shalla-Bal #1, a new one-shot that dives into the past of the MCU’s Silver Surfer.
We first heard Shalla-Bal’s chilling proclamation, heralding the arrival of Galactus and the doom of worlds, in Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps film. Now, readers will finally learn the full story behind the character and the devastating choices that shaped her destiny.
The upcoming issue explores Shalla-Bal’s life before she became the cosmic messenger of Galactus. Once an astronomer trying to save her homeworld, she ultimately surrendered her freedom in exchange for her planet’s survival. That decision transformed her into the herald of the Devourer of Worlds, forcing her to travel the cosmos in search of planets for Galactus to consume.

The issue is written by acclaimed Marvel writer Charles Soule, known for his work on Daredevil, with artwork by celebrated artist Mark Buckingham, whose previous projects include Miracleman. Buckingham has already helped shape the visual side of the First Steps comic tie-ins, including Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025) #1.
Buckingham has expressed excitement about collaborating with Soule and exploring Shalla-Bal’s past in greater depth. The story takes readers far beyond Earth, offering a dramatic and emotional look at the events leading up to the film’s timeline.
Marvel’s in-continuity one-shots are designed to expand the universe, with each issue revisiting the earliest adventures of the Fantastic Four while also exploring the origins of some of their most iconic enemies.
Fantastic Four: First Foes – Shalla-Bal #1 arrives in comic shops on June 10, featuring a cover by Phil Noto. For fans of the Fantastic Four and cosmic Marvel lore, this issue promises to be a powerful look at the sacrifices and consequences behind becoming a herald of Galactus.
