X-Men Films And Superhero Entertainment News — Trailers, Industry Coverage, Reviews, Original Comics: SUPER (2025-), Mutant Fandom And More

Marvel Comics is offering another way to experience the next chapter of X-Men ’97 before the animated series returns this Summer on Disney+. The publisher has announced X-Men ’97: Season Two, a five-issue prelude comic miniseries that will continue the story from the end of the show’s first season and help set the stage for the upcoming second season.

The new series will once again bring together writer Steve Foxe and artist Salva Espin, who previously collaborated on the official comic prelude tied to the show’s debut season. Colorist Matt Milla also returns, while Todd Nauck will provide the cover artwork for the first issue.

According to Marvel, the comic will pick up directly after the dramatic finale of X-Men ’97 season one, which left the mutant team scattered and their future uncertain. The story will explore the aftermath of Extinction-Day and follow the mutants who remain behind in a world that still fears and hunts their kind, while also beginning to unravel the mystery of where (or when) the missing X-Men have ended up.

Foxe shared that he’s excited to continue expanding the animated series’ universe alongside Espin and Milla. He noted that the comic fully embraces the major cliffhanger from the first season rather than skipping past it, and that the creative team worked closely with the show’s producers to ensure the story meaningfully expands the series’ evolving storyline.

The prelude will also introduce readers to key plot threads and important characters expected to play major roles in the next season. By exploring the fractured state of the X-Men and the growing dangers mutants face, the comic aims to deepen the world of X-Men ’97 and provide fans with additional context before the show’s return.

X-Men ’97: Season Two #1 by Steve Foxe and Salva Espin, featuring a cover by Todd Nauck, arrives in comic shops on June 3 from Marvel Comics. For fans of X-Men ’97, the series will offer an essential bridge between the first season’s explosive ending and the next chapter of the beloved animated revival.
