A fascinating new behind-the-scenes look at Clayface has given us a glimpse at the practical effects work helping bring the iconic DC creature to the big screen.
While much of the finished creature will ultimately be brought to life through visual effects, a newly shared series of images and video reveals that a full practical Clayface creature suit was constructed to help the VFX team with lighting, framing, shadows, and animation.
The suit was created by the talented team at KM Effects, who were brought on board last year to produce a variety of practical effects elements for the film, including prosthetic blood effects, fake dummies, props, and VFX lighting models.
One of their biggest challenges was creating the Clayface creature costume, with an incredibly tight turnaround of just two weeks from receiving a body scan of creature performer Spencer Wilding. The suit had to be sculpted in separate sections before being fabricated and assembled to fit the performer.
It’s a great example of how practical effects and digital visual effects can work together to create something truly convincing on screen. Even when a creature is destined to receive extensive CGI enhancement, having a physical version on set can make a huge difference in helping the VFX artists achieve the right look.
