Michael Fassbender is featured in the latest issue of Empire Magazine, which features an inside look at X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. The actor says now that McKellen’s Magneto is being brought back into the mix, he decided to change his accent from FIRST CLASS to that closer of the actor.
“I hope it’s not too much of a weird switch, but in the first one it was a concern for me and I actually kind of wish I did this [accent] the first time. Because at the beginning I was studying McKellen and doing that cadence, but [First Class director,] Matthew [Vaughn] kind of liked my accent and my rhythms. But on this one I listened to McKellen constantly. I had him on my iPhone all the time.”

I wonder if thats the case for Lawrence, Hoult and Stewart too.
Well, it’s been stated repeatedly that Jennifer’s Mystique will be closer to Rebecca’s this time out. But that’s just character evolution. It’s what makes Raven Darkholme interesting in these First Class movies. That journey from wide-eyed, raw nerved innocent, to the coldly dangerous zealot of the earlier films..
Lawrence certainly doesn’t need to adjust her accent though.
Neither does Nick, for that matter. He’s already doing an American accent, and does a fine job of capturing the young Hank McCoy to boot.
I’m not sure I know what you mean about Stewart?? If you’re talking about McAvoy; I’d argue that he was doing Patrick Stewart anyway. It never veers into outright imitation, but his performance is clearly inspired by what Stewart left behind, even while the writing seeks deliberately to establish a dichotomy between who Charles Xavier was as a young man, and who we know he becomes in later years..
Again it’s that evolution, that sense that these characters aren’t ‘cooked’ yet, that makes the First Class era compelling. In the case of Days of Future Past though, there should be the added frisson of trying to avert their mistakes, to change course, and not become what they will. Can Erik not become Magneto? Can Raven’s soul be saved? Can Charles rediscover his dream, and find the will to hope again? Can they save the world from a disastrous future?
It’s all very exciting…
lets just see how he transform to the original magneto..
It really annoyed me how Vaughn wanted the characters to be extra different just so he can show them change more and basically disregarded their future version. I did notice that Fassbender did not pull in much from McKellen and I wish Vaughn had let him!!
(though I am certainly all for charcter development, don’t get me wrong.. but it should stay true to the character not just be different to be different)
I think it was partially to free them up, and not get bogged down in what came before. But ultimately I think it gives the movies somewhere to go. That keeps it interesting.
If anything James’ Xavier seems even further away from Patrick’s in this movie, and that is nothing but intriguing.
Once they move towards becoming who they were in the original films, then I’m all for it. 🙂
