This is difficult to say, but Anna Paquin‘s Rogue has literally been removed from Bryan Singer’s upcoming X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. The director revealed the news today via Entertainment Weekly, where he says…
“Through the editing process, the sequence [featuring Rogue escaping a mutant prison camp with Iceman, Magneto and Professor X] became extraneous,” explains Singer. “It’s a really good sequence and it will probably end up on the DVD so people can see it. But like many things in the editing process, it was an embarrassment of riches and it was just one of the things that had to go. Unfortunately, it was the one and only sequence Anna Paquin was in, the Rogue character was in. Even though she’s in the materials and part of the process of making the film, she won’t appear in it.”
Singer emphasizes that the decision had nothing to do with Paquin’s performance, who filmed in Montreal for just one week. “She did a fantastic job,” he says. “She was awesome in the sequence. She’s a brilliant actress. I would work with her in a heartbeat.”
Paquin “completely understood” the decision that was made. “It’s very disappointing, but she’s very professional and she knows that stuff happens, particularly with material you shoot early on in production. Films evolve.”
Wow.
The good news here is that Singer is being responsible with his edit. He always is to be fair, but with a film like Days’ which would seem to have a lot of moving parts it’s imperative that things be kept tight.
If the scene doesn’t belong in the movie, then it shouldn’t be there.
Shame for Anna, and us fans too, But if it makes the movie better, then that’s what’s most important…
In the end maybe it was for the best, but that just really really sucks and him calling the sequence really good doesn’t help either. She was at Comic Con and in the first trailer. So shocking and dissapointing. Ugh.
It’s certainly surprising, but it’s hardly unprecedented in movie history. It happens. There’s a whole sub-plot with Luke’s friends on Tatooine that got completely chopped from Star Wars: A New Hope for instance.
This carries an extra punch though, ’cause it’s not just an actress, but a character with a strong following who’s getting left out. Many people were looking forward to seeing her in the movie, and I feel bad for them, but the filmmaker has to do what’s best for the movie.

its funny how Bryan told everyone that every characters are important in the film.. and how he surprised us that he just easily remove Rogue in it..
During the making of movies things go fine at times but its when principle photography has completed and the editing where things become a b#tch and this isn’t the only time actors’ scenes become cut from films and I am not at all surprised by Rogue not being a pivotal part of the movie because the majority of the film anyway takes place in the past than the future and honestly at first I too was very ticked off when I heard this news because just like Cyclops, Rogue has been too has been dumbed down since X2 and I rather see a comic book impression of Rogue than see her powerless and not doing anything but being rescued which I think would have ticked fans off again that love the character and they would have complained how useless once again she was in the film. I will catch it on DVD once we all see the picture we might realize why Bryan cut the scene altogether.

Looks like this movie is going to be all about Xavier and Magneto (and not Wolverine as everybody says, at least to me). The biggest problem, is not Rogue being out of it. It is that Fox and Singer antecipated this movie SO much, and they has been showing a lot of actors and characters on it, even before they started the editing! And now they just realized that there is too many characters in that, some of them useless to the story, and that they need to be cutted of
Anyway, we can only now if the movie is GOOD or BAD when we watch this. Is completely ridiculous to say that the movie is going to be bad just because there is a character out of it. It is like saying that The Dark Knight was bad because Penguin was out of it.
But I still hope he is bluffing or something. Too bad, Bryan, you should have kept everything about this movie in secret until the final cut get ready.
I would remind people that this is a ‘First Class’ sequel first and foremost. The impression I get is that Rogue was only really there at all, because Bryan wanted to get back as many of his original cast as he could manage. Ultimately though, and despite going so far as shooting her, that wasn’t to be.
It should be stressed as well, that Anna only shot for a week. Her part was only ever going to be minor. So minor in fact, that it ended up up being surplus to requirements.
They didn’t know this before SDCC. They hadn’t finished shooting yet remember. So of course they invited Anna along. As far as they were concerned, she was part of the movie at that stage. They weren’t trying to trick anyone. That’s just absurd.
She’s in the trailer as well, because they obviously hadn’t made the decision to chop that scene yet.
It didn’t work out. It’s a shame, but I give them all points for trying.
One of the worst things a movie can have, is too much fat on it. It should grab you, pull you on a ride, and deposit you out the other end before you really realise what’s happening. If there’s a scene that works against that, then it needs to go!! ‘Days of Future Past’, with its myriad moving parts, complex plot, and enormous cast, is under more pressure than most to keep things tight.

So much for the the most anticipated movie of 2014! Since the start of the franchise Rogue has always been underistimated and disrespected, even in the last stand they found out a way to make Rogue boring and passive, with a stupid and messed up cure. I guess this was the last chance to visit rogue again, this is and was kind of like the last chance because i do not think they will have a movie with the original cast again. This is also a great disrespect from Bryan singer to Anna Paquin and her fans, that in general very unproffessional. Well i guess this a goodbye to a much beloved but much underrated character, may she live in a our now-corrupted mind…

I prefer this too, Why watch an useless Rogue just because she was on the old movies?, this character wasn’t developed at all in any movie, I can say I’ve not seen Rogue on these films… In that way, just for watching one shot of her running away, thanks to move it out! Cause All fans would like to see her probably fliying and fighting and not being just one useles more mutant…. problem with big casts, I prefer a good movie that a ‘show that loved mutant for one second’ movie, isn’t it?
I will disagree. Fans of the character i think needs a sign, on where she is or what she is doing after the events of the last stand. By just having her presence kind of shows where she is, for all we do not know she could be dead by someone. It is sad, really ashamed, anna paquin must feel left outside from the cast and Crew. But this is also a fan writing this, i am a huge fan of rogue and gambit, two awesome mutants. But god i will love to just see her in her costume and just be where we know her to be. It is just so furstraiting to not know where she is during the upcoming events of the movie. And people saying that they are satisfied with singers coice, because they was not fans of the rogue in the movies, because of her lack of character and action, Maybe that potential rescue scene had her do some action, besides just see her running will get her to do more action, than any of the previous films, action-wise.
Yes she needs to be addressed or the assumption might be that she died, despite knowing what was filmed. Bobby and Kitty will hopefully talk about her at the very least.
There’s a rumor they might add Rogue in again during reshoots, but it’s not enough for me to post the story, as it sounds like speculation more than anything. I just don’t see Bryan pubicly saying she’s out if there was any chance of her being put back into the film…but we’ll see. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Anna can show up again in the next Wolverine Movie, James Mangold said on his twitter page that the movie is pretty much a done deal.
I agree to what you said particularly about the part of the audience would assume that Rogue among other mutants had been disintegrated by the Sentinels and she is dead because they chose to cut her but at the same time I think that regardless of how the scene worked or didn’t work with a follow up scene still should have edited her to still grace her appearance in some fashion even if it is for 5 seconds. I believe the vast majority of the film for the future focus is going to be Xavier, Magneto, Wolverine (of course), Kitty and Bobby for the most part and Storm would have had a larger role had it not been for Halle’s pregnancy as already been addressed. So hopefully I have no clue who is going to be apart of the reshooting other than more screentime with Colossus which I am fine with because he is hardly used for any of the past films anyway but I still think Anna also should return for the reshoots since the real reason as to why she couldn’t have been in the Montreal longer was because of her commitment to True Blood and their filming schedule and if she is not well we have X1-X3 of Rogue because ‘Apocalypse’ film from my understanding isn’t going to be focused on the original cast. Which is a shame.
I wish this is just to hype up the publicity and then eventually she will get put back into the movie.

No one got really upset when Banshee, Emma Frost, Azazel, Angel Salvadore and the other characters didn’t make the cut for DOFP.

I really would love to see Rogue fighting, but if her scenes are unnecessary, they should cut it. It’s a shame, but it will be a lot worst if the movie end up having a lot ot unnecessary scenes/characters.

1-Anna said that she’ ve read the script, and really liked her role in that movie, and that she didn’t liked Rogue’s end on The Last Stand, so what’s the point of she coming back just for an unnecessary sequence?
2-Bryan said that he was keeping the character in secret because she would be surprising on the movie.
And what’s surprising about being rescued? I don’t think that the rescue was her only scene. Feels like they are keeping something from us.
Plus, in the trailer, she appears not just being rescued by Iceman and Magneto, but also inside that ancient temple, looking down.
But, well, I’m still looking foward this movie, Rogue being out of it doesn’t means that it is going to be bad.
Ok, I think everyone needs to take a step back and look at this calmly without calling Mr. Singer names lol. I am a fan of Rogues as well but if her only part in the movie is to be the damsel in distress that needs to be rescued… I don’t really care about that. I would rather see other mutants like STORM, Iceman, Shadowcat & Colossus get that screen time. I would rather see Rogue’s character really fleshed out in a future movie like A Wolverine movie, X-Force, or a future X-MEN film. I’ve seen enough of passive mousy Rogue. I don’t need to see more of that and if thats how they wrote her part in Days of future past.. it doesn’t matter to me that they cut the scenes. I love Anna as an actress and think she could really do Rogue justice if it is written right. So I’m hoping they will do that in a future movie. Final note, this would not be happening if it were not the Wolverine show lol….. but it is what it is. I’m hoping for an X-Men movie where Storm, Cyclops, & Rogue all get there do. And for God sakes, give us some Gambit 😉
Make it a two part film, so that every character can shine. Even if this film is longer than the extended cut of THE WOLVERINE, it will be too short.
Just like they did with The Hobbit, the last Potter and Twilight film and next year with Hunger Games, they should just make DAYS a two part feature.

I;m so disappointed in this news and I started reading more articles about Anna Paquin’s removal as Rogue in XMEN Days: of Future Past. Like the other people posted in this site, I agree that Bryan Singer’s statement regarding Rogue’s one and only scene is untrue. I’d see Rogue looking down in the trailer, precisely looking with Iceman and Kitty Pryde who seems having a relationship. Also I;d seen her running in the trailer rescued by Magneto and Iceman and in photos Seating in the jet with Professor X and Magneto. So Bryan Singer is that what you call One and Only scene? I’m so sad and angered because Anna Paquin is a good and talented actress and after her promotions in SDCC and showing her name in the trailer all will end up to this? I don’t have any arguments if the scene he demand should be cut off. if its necessary what I just want is to see her in the film even in a short while. What kind of Marketing Fox have? If you want people to patronize the film and earn millions of dollars worldwide, you should know the Pro’s and Con’s of your actions before releasing the film.
Lastly, It’s just my comment. I still need to see the film in theaters if Singer justified his performance.

I don’t think people understand what this movie is at all. This will be a majority first class sequel, everyone from the oldcast are basically doing cameos, everyone from the future will be doing cameos. you will see it start with the JFK then flash to a future we dont know send wolverine to the past and the last battle will flash between the two time lines much like the comic was written.
I think we’re looking more at a film that will jump back and forth throughout its run-time much as ‘The Godfather Part II’ does, for example. But I agree, this is a ‘First Class’ sequel first and foremost, and the future segments will exist mainly as counterpoint to the main drama in the 1970’s.
I do not think you know what the movie is about. The movie is listed as a sequal to the Wolverine. Not First Class.

I think it’s really important to note that this announcement was first reported in Entertainment Weekly RIGHT after an Apocalypse story session. I feel like Bryan wouldn’t cut a character with such a large fan base if he didn’t want to feature her in perhaps a larger sense later in a different movie. While I’m extremely upset, almost to the point of not seeing DOFP, about her being cut it might be to allow for more time or a better story in Apocalypse.
ALSO: True Blood is having its final season this tv year (2013-2014), so that leaves her plenty of time to shoot in Apocalypse. It’s not unreasonable to imagine her in Apocalypse because its completely pointless to bring the two casts together to then immediately tear them apart. Apocalypse is a continuation, so the two timeline story presentation would only help keep a continuation/connection to DOFP.
As far as I know about XMEN, Professor X, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, Rogue and Wolverine battle against Apocalypse. the first mutant born and the most powerful enemy of the XMEN. So why they are excluding the Original cast members from the next XMEN sequel? Bryan Singer said he wanted to correct the mistakes of Brett Ratner’s X3 but he’s doing worse on his next sequel if he didn’t consider the fact that the original cast fits the storyline and the fans are waiting for an XMEN 5. Besides, how the characters of First Class will battle Apocalypse if they are not many as we see in the comics? They are outnumbered. They need a huge army or something. Cyclops and Jean must be put in Apocalypse film. Mr. Sinister as well and lastly I HOPE Rogue will be cast here as one of the main characters as just like what she did in the first two films. I also wanted her powers to be develop and use mostly in battle scenes.
More recent stories are that Wolverine will jump back and fourth across time and we will be seeing various scenes from the previous X-Men Movies. and yes, we will be seeing Gambit again.
