X-MEN and FANTASTIC FOUR exist in parallel universes.

Producers Simon Kinberg and Hutch Parker tell New York Daily News that the X-MEN and FANTASTIC FOUR worlds exist in parallel universes. “The Fantastic Four live in a world without mutants and the X-Men live in a world without the Fantastic Four,” they said in a joint e-mail. But that doesn’t close off the idea for potential crossovers. “Crossing them over would be challenging, but we sure would love to see all those actors together, the way we had them on stage at (San Diego) Comic Con.”

X-Men director Bryan Singer previously said that “time” would be a factor in the two worlds crossing over. “Those ideas are in play. That would be a natural match-up because they’re both ensemble films and there is a natural mechanism by which to do it.”

In case you’re wondering if this is a last ditch effort by Fox to get out of a cinematic universe due to FF’s low critical reception, it’s not. These details were actually leaked a while back, with the original plan having Dr. Doom mention traveling to a parallel Earth where mutants exist. Whether or not that’s in the final cut of the film, I have no clue as I haven’t seen it…yet.
