Mega-producer and writer Simon Kinberg spoke briefly with The Hashtag Show about the current slate of X-MEN films developing at 20th Century Fox.
“The first thing up, we’re shooting the WOLVERINE movie right now and we start shooting DEADPOOL 2 at the beginning of next year, then I sit down and start writing the next of the mainline X-Men movies.”
That last bit confirms that Kinberg does intend to continue writing the main X-Men films. He also worked on THE LAST STAND (co-writer), DAYS OF FUTURE PAST and most recently, APOCALYPSE.
On GAMBIT, which is developing with star Channing Tatum, Kinberg says “We have a great script on that and hope to shoot that movie at the beginning of spring of next year.” It’s unknown if director Doug Liman is still attached, as he recently signed to direct ‘The Wall’ for Amazon Studios. Of course there’s plenty time until next Spring.
Describing the NEW MUTANTS screenplay by director/writer Josh Boone and writer Knate Gwaltney as “very loyal to the comics,” Kinberg says he expects production on the film – which follows a young adult mutant group – to take place “sometime real soon.” It has a rumored released date of June 29, 2018.
I really think Kinberg should go from the writer’s slot. The franchise needs a new direction.

Please dont let it be the dark phoenix saga, if they wer wise they would do the phoenix saga first and then do the dark phoenix saga.
If they’re gonna tackle Phoenix again they need to go all the way, cosmic and all as to not feel like a retread of X3. I agree on the focusing of Phoenix first before going into Dark Phoenix. Even Sophie Turner said she’d like that first. But we know how big stories are condensed into 2-hour film. The entire Phoenix Saga itself can really sustain its own trilogy if they wanted.
So true. A challenge with cosmic is budget, though. Space seems to cost money. Like, Marvel is known for managing budgets with an eye on the bottom line and Guardians of the Galaxy went over. It was 195M with tax credits.
It’s going to be hard for an X-Men movie to get in the black at that level. The movie would need to make 675-700M to break even.
