Celebrating X-Men Films And Beyond

Producer confirms LEGION and Fox’s developing X-Men show will not affect the cinematic universe in any way.

FX’s upcomong LEGION series will be with us in just two short weeks! Executive producer Lauren Shuler Donner spoke more about the show to IGN and also gave more insight into Fox TV’s untitled X-Men universe show which deals with normal parents who have mutant teens.

First thing first: It seems both shows will actually have no direct connection to the films. “No, we’re making it separate,” she said of Legion. “We’re in our own world.” This is probably due to the fact that Marvel is co-producing both shows. Or maybe just a creative decision.

“Probably the driving mystery [in Legion] is, yes, who is David? But not in that sense [if he’s Charles Xavier’s son], she explains. “It’s more, ‘Is David schizophrenic? Is he crazy? Or does he have powers?’ That is the mystery. ‘Who is David?’ We just don’t want to get into the Xavier world, because that’s not what this show is about.”

If Xavier is ever shown in future seasons, it wont be the Patrick Stewart or James McAvoy version: “Yes, we’re in a different world.”

Fox’s untitled show is said to be closer to the films, though it’s probably best to not expect a direct extension of the film universe, with crossovers and such.

“[It’s] much more a part of just the world in terms of there are mutants, mutants are hated and there are Sentinels — though very different from what we’ve seen before. You feel like you’re here in the X-Men world. With Legion, we’re our own universe. It gives Noah the freedom to do what he wants to do. Because we play with so many different timelines, and we rebooted and not really rebooted and all that, we felt like, OK, we’re going to throw it out there and hope the fans accept it.

“The cinematic universe will not worry about Legion. They will not worry about these TV worlds as all. They will just continue in the way that they have been continuing, and there is some great stuff that we are developing. I can just say it’s going to be new and different, and yet Legion and our other show, we’re not going to get in each other’s way.”
