By now every Marvel fan should know that the company has set its sights on a video game revival. With a somewhat dubious reputation to date in the high-end console space, Marvel has made bold statements promoting its own intentions, and appears to be on the verge of several noteworthy releases in the next year or so. There has been no specific mention of an X-Men title among these releases (unless you count character appearances in Marvel vs. Capcom) – but we have three reasons that there should be.
1. The Forthcoming Lineup Is Diverse Anyway
We can already look at all of the Marvel games in development, and the selection is almost surprisingly diverse. There’s the Guardians Of The Galaxy Telltale game that was already released this year; a forthcoming Spider-Man title that the gaming community is wildly excited about; a mysterious Avengers-related game; and the aforementioned extension of the Marvel vs. Capcom series. Those are just four titles and they already indicate that Marvel is spreading its wings – so why not rope in perhaps the most diverse cast of characters they have? There’s already a focus on teams (Avengers and Guardians, for instance), so a full-fledged X-Men game would seem to be a nice fit.
2. There Are No Standalone X-Men Games
Aside from a few mobile games, there aren’t noteworthy X-Men games out there these days. There hasn’t been a major console game about the characters in years, and even the mobile games are somewhat “old school,” imitating old arcade experiences rather than creating new ones. In previous years, Marvel had risen to fame in the online slot gaming sector, with games based on Wolverine and the rest of the X-Men right in the thick of the action. But Marvel has since shut down this wing of its entertainment empire, and will no longer allow casino games based on its content. Add it all up and there’s a lack of modern gaming content revolving around the X-Men. The need is there.
3. Marvel’s Last Best Title Was A Wolverine Game
It’s subjective, but one can make the argument that the last great Marvel console game was X-Men Origins: Wolverine, back in 2009. The film of the same name was certainly underwhelming, but this was a fun game, true to the character and built on excellent graphics for its time. Said one review, the game was a bloody blast for Wolvie fans – and it seems easily replicable. Should Marvel opt for another Wolverine game to build on this one’s success (albeit nearly a decade later), it could make an excellent game based on Logan – the most recent and possibly best of the modern X-Men movies.
Considering all of these factors, it seems like a no-brainer for the company to make some of its magnificent mutants central to a near-future gaming release. Let’s just hope they realize it.
