With the recent deal for Disney to acquire 20th Century Fox, it’s anyone’s guess if director James Mangold will get to see his LAURA treatment with X-23 co-creator Craig Kyle see the light of day. Its been reported the merger will take anywhere from a 12-18 months to complete and that Fox will continue to operate and greelight projects as they see fit until then. Might LOGAN breakout Dafne Keen get the chance before Wolverine is recast and mutants are officially part of the MCU? That remains to be seen.
In an older interview with Empire Magazine (January 2018 issue) which took place before Disney entered the picture, the young actress said that she would “like to keep playing” the character.
“Yes, of course! I’m in love with the character; she feels [a] part of me,” she said enthusiastically. “I’d like to keep playing her. And to work with Jim [Mangold] again would be the best thing ever.”
Keen says the best thing about getting to play Laura was “how hard it was [to portray her], because she was a very complex character. She was a child, but she had this beast inside her, which made her unable to be that child.”
While Hugh Jackman has officially hung up the claws and has no intentions to produce a spin-off with Mangold, she says she has kept in touch with her on-screen papa: “Yes, I love him. We write emails to each other. He was really nice to work with. He was always singing and happy. I never saw him cross or sad, apart from when he was in character. Every Friday, he would bring these little lottery papers and go around the set giving them to the crew, saying “Lucy Friday! Lucky Friday!”
Whether or not Keen gets to play Laura again, she was at least able to grab a memento from her time filming. “I took the unicorn T-shirt. I was supposed to get the claws, but they wouldn’t pass border control.”
