Longtime X-MEN producer and ‘Dark Phoenix’ director Simon Kinberg gave Entertainment Weekly a few updates on some of 20th Century Fox’s upcoming genre films. With Disney’s acquisition of Fox properties looming, these may be the final films from the series we’ve come to love.
Dark Phoenix
“It’s normal for all these big movies now,” said Kinberg on his directorial-debut undergoing reshoots. “We’ll go back when we can get all those actors together, and then it will give me enough time to have it ready and looking perfect.” The complications of scheduling the large cast’s return for additional photography, including the detailed visual effects shots pushed the film back from its original November 2018 date to February 14, 2019.
X-Force
Writer and director Drew Goddard’s mutant team will feature Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and ‘Deadpool 2’ newcomers Cable (Josh Brolin), Domino (Zazie Beetz) and others. “Drew, Ryan, and I sat down and talked quite a bit about what X-Force would be,” said Kinberg, “but we haven’t settled on who those characters are yet. But certainly we’d want Cable and Domino to be part of it.”
Gambit
To say its been a long road for Gambit is a massive understatement. From multiple directors dropping out, to script rewrites, things were looking a bit shady for Channing Tatum’s solo film about a mutant with kinetic powers. But Kinberg says they have “a really great script for that, and we’ve met with a bunch of directors in the last couple of weeks.”
