It’s epic. It is like watching three movies at one time.
My favorite characters were Charles and Eric. Their scenes together were powerful! Their evolution from best friends to enemies logical.
It felt rushed though. Even more than X3, which was filled with too many plots. The 130 minutes were too short. Some character scenes were just sweet, and I would have wanted them to go on like that forever… too bad they did not.
I will have to see the movie again until I can give it a proper review and rank among the other X-films.
I’ve just seen it and it was awesome ! To tell you how awesome it was, people clapped their hands at the end (and at a very special cameo), and people never do that in france. Plus people here aren’t generally big comic book movie or comic book fans. So that tells a lot about the quality of the movie.
I as an X-fan loved it even more, even if some scenes were indeed a little fast, like Xavier above said (e.g I would have loved to see the Azazel fight scenes better developped, and another one or two). Of course you also have to put aside most of what you know about the characters from the comics to really appreciate it.
As for the characters themselves, the MAJOR factor of awesomeness is Michael Fassbender. He is really perfect as Erik, he manages to transmit the contradictory emotions, the difficulty to develop his power to its maximum, his differences with Charles in almost every point (even though actually this last point is mostly thanks to Vaughn). It’s funny how Charles is supposed to be the leader, sure of himself and all, and in the end, thinking back of the movie, in every scene with both Charles and Erik, Erik dominates in every way.
Erik was so well characterized, when in the end he says “Who’s with me ?”, you wanna say “ME ! I don’t want to team up with this loser, Xavier” ;-).
I also liked Mystique and Shaw. The others were also cool but it’s true they hadn’t enough screen time. Emma Frost was honestly somehow a disappointment for me, I don’t know why but she felt kinda off.

Oh I forgot to speak about the different langages ! That was something I really liked in Inglourious Basterds, and it was the same in First Class : people talk the langage they are supposed to talk ! You don’t have a russian, a french, a german and a chilian all speaking english. No, they speak as they should. And, understanding french, german and english, I can tell you the french is almost perfect (though Fassbender’s accent is a little funny) and the german sounds perfect to me (as far as I can tell).

That just adds to the awesomeness of Fassbender who speaks Chilian, French, German, Russian and English in the movie :-). I hope this dealing of the languages will become more and more usual in the future. I can’t stand the american movies where the whole world speaks american anymore. The worst being the Sci-Fi movies where the whole universe speaks english ^^.

The only real problem I have is the ending, since it does not correspond with X3’s opening and Stewarts XMOW cameo. But I am sure they will be able to work something out here.

Well maybe they found a way to cure him sometime between FC and XMOW, and then something even more severe happened.
But with the exception of that… the film fits perfectly into the continuity established through the 4 predecessors.
I saw Xavier gains the ability to walk and then loses it again.

Guys, I LOVE it!!! The BEST X-Men movie out from the 5 X-men films. Mystique is awesome. I got to see Storm, Cyclops, and Dazzler in cameos. Im not gonna spoil anything. I will let you all see it for yourself. But this movie is a HECK fun! Matt Vaughn and Singer did a phenomenal job. Kudos to Fassbender, McAvoy and Bacon! X-Men First Class premiered here in the PHILIPPINES June 2nd. Geez. Guys, I think XFC is more of a reboot than a prequel based on the story of this film. Im having a big vibe that Mr. Sinister is the next thing to beat in an upcoming sequel. It is not a reboot but a prequel. It WILL be the start of a new trilogy though.
Seems like we have three series in development right now:
– FIRST CLASS
– WOLVERINE
– Prime Series (X4 & X5)

Lauren Donner confirmed that X4 and X5 are in the process. Obviously, WOlverine is about to start this fall while Deadpool would be next year. I hope they will make a sequel for First Class by 2013. Really cant wait. I love X-Men so much!
I like the idea of X4 and X5 because it’s totally separate from First Class. The characters in X4 and X5 don’t need to mix with characters in First Class. They could go in a new direction and take Storm and (maybe?) Wolverine running a new school for mutants or something.

Went For the Gala Premiere… and i have to say THE BEST X-Men Movie ever since X-Men 2.
Just got back from the movie. Pretty frickin’ awesome. My only real complaint is that like someone pointed out in an earlier post; it felt a little rushed at times, especially the training. But I get it, you have to keep the plot moving. And I wished there had been a little more character interaction between the ‘first class’ but other than that, the movie is great. I encourage everyone to give it a shot.
Saw XFC at minight, and it really did live up to my expectations and the reviews being given. As a long-time fan, i can honestly say no X-Men film has ever made me gasp, clap or cheer as much as this one, and although X2 is still my favorite X-film, this prequel has become my second favorite.
I liked the storyline and the handling of the characters in this film. Like everyone else who cheered during the movie, i was ecstatic to see all the cameos of actors and characters in XFC…they were greatly appreciated and the perfect touch.
One of the most coolest aspects of this film is its ability to feel like a beginning and finale. Soooooo many questions, left by previous X-Men films, are finally answered. But perhaps the greatest part of XFC is the presentation and relationship between Xavier and Erik. I absolutely loved Erik’s story and personality–Fassbender was perfect! In the end, what steals the show is the chemistry between Mccavoy and Fassbender, which gives us the perfect depiction of an honest, but plagued, friendship between two great adversaries.
Everything fits! Even the remaining X-Men, by the end of this film, sets up for the perfect team we’ve been complaining about not having for a most definite sequel.

As for contunity view this as Prequel to X-Men and X2.X4/X5 are being discussed.This
streches the border between Prequel and Reboot but there are connections to Bryan Singer’s films.Singer Is producer here and will likely be producer of any First Class sequel.If we get him producing the first class sequels with vaughn directing and Singer directs X4 we are In for good times.Now they need a compentent director for The Wolverine.
I loved this movie. absolutely loved had all the great feelings of the bryan singer x-men films. Vaughn did wonderful and the cast was great. connected so well to the trilogy. I am one happy xfan.

I saw it tonight, and I have to say, I loved it. The child actors were phenomonal in the beginning, and although it did seem a bit rushed with the training, the rest of the movie made up for it, in my opinion.

X-Men First Class is the best X-Men film ever. I just had some four to five complains but those were technical. There’s inconsistency effects of Mystique’s transformation (The Beast and her scene wearing a wardrobe), second was the elastic effect of Shaw’s body when he was absorbing energy. Those two were the ones Im most concern but all in all, IT WAS DAMN GOOD! Love Riptide and Azazel’s power. They DID IMPROVE Emma’s diamond transformation. The DIAMOND effect of this one is PERFECTLY CRAFTED and absolutely BETTER than in X-Men Origins:Wolverine. Love the cameos of Wolverine and Rebecca Romijn. I think the sign of the cross that Banshee did was a SIGN that he has some Irish heritage. lol I just love the whole movie and definitely gonna watch it again sometime next week. You all need to watch it guys, it’s a good summer movie. Can’t wait for the sequel of it. and by the way MAGNETO’s new costume was AWESOME and very COMIC-BASED!

It was a tastefully done! it has the fantastic elements i love in X1 and X2 and had a classic bond feel, AMAZING!

I really started to like the score… anyone bought the mp3s at amazon? It sounds like a symbiosis of Ottmanns X2 score and a Hans Zimmer’s LAST SAMURAI. My favorite being “First Class” and “Mutant and proud”.
I really would love to see the extended cut of the film. I read on imdb, that some 30 minutes were cut from the release. Maybe they will release it as an unrated DC on Bluray.

I just wanted to add something. A lot of people seem to think Xavier being paralyzed in this movie messes up the connection to the other movies, but I disagree. Who is to say in those two scenes (in X3 and Wolverine) where we see Patrick Stewart walking he was not using a physic projection similar to the one we saw Emma Frost using on the Russian Commander in First Class. Does anyone agree with me? Anthony?
Well you can say that and I think, it’s a great idea but I prefer that he used a long leg braces to help him to walk again like what Professor X used in Wolverine and the X-men.

About adding only one mutant. Are you sure by that? Only one mutant isn’t enough for the sequel and who’s that mutant? the new villain after killing Sebastian Shaw? I think they have many plans about the sequel and the idea is increasing.

Well my guess: Apocalypse. They will make him the antagonist, Xavier and Magneto will join forces (pretty much like they did in X2). I hope they will somehow manage to include Victor Creed into the sequel. Liev did a terrific job in X-MEN ORIGINS WOLVERINE. Maybe a cameo?
Sabertooth and Toad must be in the sequel. Apocalypse? You think it’s to early to put him in the film? Maybe villains such as Hellions or Acolytes, because now that both of the team leader already appear include Emma Frost and Magneto. Marauders are good too but I think it would be best if it appears on future X-men Films with the complete cast of X-men and not in First Class..

I couldn’t find the link on were he said that.. but I remeber saying that NOW THAT PROFESSOR X ends in the wheel chair at the end of the story.. he needs only one character to make MAGNETO’S plan impossible.. beacause CHARLES can do much with MAGNETO now that he has is helmet..

I finally managed to get to the cinema tonight (I know I’m undeniably late for an X-fan, but I’m terribly poor/busy at the mo) and I think the film was fantastic.
After a pretty dire X-men 3 and Wolverine film, I was so glad they went with Matt Vaughn for this….. He’s a brilliant director and really renewed my excitement for the X-men movie franchise with this film. The rather odd-job bunch of characters actually worked really well together and my prior thoughts regarding various characters comic book history (Havok’s relation to Cyclops, Mystique + Azazel = Nightcrawler) can easily be interpreted in future sequels if need be. Prof X and Magneto’s relationship was well recognized and I’m actually particularly happy with the amount of screen time the rest of the cast got (which admittedly wasn’t a lot in some cases, but was enough to keep me happy and ready for development in a further sequel). Sebastian Shaw was a good villain, although the way he seemingly never-aged and his motives within the film would have felt more suited to a character like Mr Sinister (who as it happens, I also believe would have been played brilliantly by Kevin Bacon :P). I enjoyed it nevertheless though and feel it was structured well, give or take a few jumpy cuts and scenes (the aforementioned training scenes etc.) and despite a few issues I overall really think this film hit the mark. It was cheesetastic at times (which isn’t a bad thing, as it’s to be expected) and is definitely a movie highlight of the year for me!! 🙂
As for those flaws, they are mainly little niggly things that only a geeky guy like me would pick up on…..
1) I may be alone in this, but I wasn’t keen with the post-transformation Beast…… his character notably became more feral and growly which is fair enough considering his new beastly appearance, but at the same time he didn’t seem to retain any of his characteristics pre-transformation. Regardless of appearance, he seemed to change from super-smart awkward teen to cocky, confident youth within the space of a (admittedly very eventful) night. Also the make-up was all good and well, but his facial animation wasn’t really up to par…..
2) The scene at the beginning with a young Charles and Mystique seemed a bit iffy to me. Now don’t get me wrong, i liked that the storyline of them having a history together…. but this beginning scene just seemed a bit odd to me. It was like the writers thought to themselves, ‘how can we have Charles and Raven first meet?? hmmmm, I know how about Raven randomly invites herself into a multi-million mansion in the middle of nowhere to steal food from cos she’s really really hungry….. and then he’ll be so excited to meet another mutant (what are the chances? :P) that he’ll immediately offer her to stay with him for life regardless of the fact he’s ABOUT TWELVE YEARS OLD and hasn’t asked his parents yet (altho I suppose he wouldn’t need too with his mind tricks and all)’.
Yes, perhaps I’m reading a bit too much into it…… just seemed a little weird to me is all. Don’t even get me started on the fact that in the original films Prof X never thought to mention to his team that Mystique used to be like a sister to him…. so ya know ‘take it easy on her ay?’ 😛
3) Darwin died to quickly!!! Not a huge problem tbh, I just thought the character was cool and could have been developed soooooo much further 😛
4) I realise its how it looked in the comics, but did they really have to put the little horns on the front of Magneto’s helmet?? It looked silly in real life. Haha. Also, I loved how they subtly decided not to mention HOW exactly the helmet works….. just that it came from the Russians (thats not me complaining btw, I genuinely dunno how I would have explained it either 😀 ).

The same flaw that I noticed too in the film. Adding when Emma Frost use her diamond ability and can still use her Telepathy. I thought she can’t use her telepathy when in diamond form.
About the Cerebro, in past X-men film I remember that Professor X told to the other that he built the Cerebro with the help of Magneto but it appears that Beast invented it by himself.
I’ve read that Darwin survive the attack for somehow, and I know he will. He can’t die with that energy ball.
Oh yeah, I hadn’t thought of those points actually 😛
I suppose with Emma it wasn’t so bad that she could use telepathy in diamond form…. kinda helped the story move along, but at least it could block other telepaths so it was half way there. Gotta admit tho, considering in the comics she gained the diamond form as part of a secondary mutation a LONG time after the character debuted….. it seemed a bit random in the film universe to have her be one of the only mutants to have two powers and leave it unexplained. But that’s just me being picky 😛
I presume in regards to Cerebro, Beast had made some sort of prototype (which I believe got destroyed in the film by riptide?)….. and then probably later in the films timeline, the Professor gets a new one built under the mansion (as seen in the original trilogy). Still, presumably Beast builds that one too…. unless Magneto really needs a hand finding some mutants and temporarily puts his feud with the Professor on hold to help rebuild it?? Haha I dunno, I’m clutching at stings here 😀

I’m especially convinced Darwin is dead and gone now though….. he was used so little in this film, that I doubt anybody will care enough to bring him back for a sequel and try and explain it. A shame though, he was such a cool character…… and considering his comic book counterpart was able to survive as pure energy for decades before being revealed, it seemed a bit naff that in the film he was killed off just like that.
It’s really annoying that they killed a character that should be able to survive everything. Like you said he wasn’t a major character, so there are probably no plans to bring him back. It would be cool if they brought him back though. I liked what little I saw of the character.

I read in the interviews that she would be more like her future self towards the end of the film.
Not a screaming and crying little girl. I mean Angel was more tougher..>COME ON!!!

I thought that she would do something bad or soemthing that would make her like she is.
In the previous X Films she is twisted and sick and she doesn’t relate to the one we just saw.
I liked how she went to Charles first and not Erik though BUT If they did not have the start of the film and their relationship of them meeting as klids, she wouldn’t of done that and she would’ve been more like her previous self.

I was thinking this earlier today actually….. Off all the characters (with the exception of Beast who as I’ve written above, I wasn’t the most happy with :P) Mystique was the least like her original character by a mile. I mean suuuure by the end of the film she was working alongside Magneto and suuuuure she was walking around naked as she very well should be, and suuuuuuuuuure she had bit of an attitude….. but overall, by the end of first class she was nothing like the cold, heartless, killer we know from the original trilogy…. just a confused, angry yet innocent young girl.
I have an idea that could fix this however…… So In the sequel or sequels, Mystique gets charmed by old Azazel, falls in love and sleeps with him (or perhaps he turns on her, is more ruthless and evil then she thought, and could take ‘things’ one step to far…. I don’t whether I wanna make things too dark though, it would be a PG13 after all :P). She later falls pregnant and within time has a little baby nightcrawler…… ANYWAY, the point I’m trying to get too is that for some reason, the humans attack the mutants and Mystique will be forced to give up her baby and therefore turn her into the ruthless, cold-hearted killer we know and love. You could even throw a few heart-breaking deaths in there….. perhaps Azazel sacrifices himself to try and save them or something to that effect pushing her over the edge and forcing her to kill too?? It needs a bit more thought obviously 😛
I liked seeing the evolution of Mystique. Hopefully in sequels she will get more ruthless like you said. I’m sure we’ll see what causes her to turn into X1-X3 Mystique.
Mystique needed more action in the film.

About Mystique, I’m really wish she had some fighting scene in the movie but still good for me.
I just thought they will going explain the part that she’s afraid to go to school when she was a child, The thing that she mentioned in X1.
I thought she going to kick some bullies ass. I admit that Emma Frost and Angel steal her spot light in XFC.
I’m still hoping that Darwin survive. I have read that he transform into some kind of energy. I just saw the article and haven’t read it clearly.
Come on… no need to keep Darwin alive… just as no need to bring back Cyclops and Jean from the dead.
The most awesome fact about the X-Men is, that it is an ensemble show… you do not need to rely on one singe character. This creates drama and tension, since you do not know who might survive and who might not.
Much better than the generic comic-based movie like Thor, Iron Man et al.
Thor will not die, since this would end the series… same with Iron Man. Those franchises are boring and perdictible.
I Agree that deaths are more dramatic if the characters stay dead, but only if the characters have been allowed time to develop first, there’s no point otherwise.
I think Darwin as a character, could had a lot more potential than just being the basis of a rather cliche death to progress the film. As for Cyclops, his death was just a naff excuse to allow the actor to fulfill his contract before jumping ship to film Superman!!
Professor X’s death in X3 however was done very well, cos I at least never expected it to happen to such a major character to go like that… and therefore gave the film some momentum 🙂
Well you have to blame James Marsden for that. He went with Singer to film the horrible SUPERMAN movie, instead of staying on the X-Men.
As for Xavier’s death… one of my favorite on screen death scenes to date. The scene, the score… epic.
Same with Jean.
I don’t know, for me it’s not really clear if Cyclops died on the film. And we all know that they can bring back Jean. And for Professor X, the after credit was explainable to us.
But if they can’t make those character back in the film, maybe it would be best if they gonna focus on the other character like Rogue. I want to see her in fight with the other new character.
I think they should focus on the young mutants from X3 in X4. Storm as the school director and Wolverine as the team leader – finally having a home and a place where he belongs to.
Well let’s just wait and see what they will come up with.
I am looking forward to FIRST CLASS 2 and THE WOLVERINE, since I really liked X3 and thought that it was an epic conclusion of the story.
Emma was great, but the german synchro was way too young. The whole movie was great.
What I did not like was the fact that Emma -referring to X-Men Origins- was too old. I think they should´ve thought about that before making X-Origins. But I´m glad she had so much to do in the movie.
And – sorry, but anyone noticed that Emma´s diamond form almost shattered?? What — what— I mean— diamond— Emma— HELLO?? That was REALLY kinda unrealistic. Stupid Lensherr.
You know, I don´t agree with you and the “I´ve seen Dazzler”-thing. The blond dancing girl was a stripper at the Hellfire Club; I doubt that it was Dazzler.
They did a good job showing how the different characters developed their powers and learned how to deal with them.

Yeah I didn’t like that Magneto could easily break her neck if he wanted to. She’s supposed to be stronger than that.
Yeah. My friends said, “Cool.. He almost breaks her neck!. Go for it!”.. and I was, “No way! Diamonds can only break by Diamonds. and that’s Emma Frost in Diamond form for God sake”..
I think they made Magneto so strong because no one can defeat her in that form, even Professor X.
Non-X-men fans really love it while the true x-men fans, mostly didn’t.
Thought it was great.. but i liked the originals better. They just had a better feel, and were just as intelligent without feeling like they were TRYING to be. I also am afraid that the “connected to history” thing will be taken too far and begin to feel like history/politics lessons. I care about X-men- their powers, relationships, stories, etc… not the fake American history!
I think most of us agree that X4,5 etc. is what we really want.
