X-Men: First Class Box Office: $55 million opening weekend.

X-MEN: FIRST CLASS opens to $55 million; brings in $119 million worldwide!

Budgeted at $160 million (before tax breaks), X-MEN: FIRST CLASS pulled in $3.37 million from debut midnight shows, $20.8 million on Friday, $19.8 million on Saturday and $15.3 million on Sunday, bringing in a $55 million opening weekend haul.

Foreign numbers stand at $64 million, bringing a worldwide gross of $119 million.

“Given that we are reinventing the X-Men franchise with a critically acclaimed director and top actors who are not really widely known to audiences, we’re hoping to be somewhere around BATMAN BEGINS ($48.7M) and X-MEN ($54.4M). That seems to be a good target area for us.” said a rep for Fox.

The film opened in 3,641 domestic locations, which is fewer than X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE’s 4,099, X2’s 3,741 and X-MEN: THE LAST STAND’s 3,690) but greater than the first X-MEN’s 3,025 according to Box Office Mojo.

We think these numbers are just fine. The film has received rave reviews and is easily one of the best X-MEN films. Success for First Class will come in the long run, rather than up-front.
