X-MEN: FIRST CLASS opens to $55 million; brings in $119 million worldwide!
Budgeted at $160 million (before tax breaks), X-MEN: FIRST CLASS pulled in $3.37 million from debut midnight shows, $20.8 million on Friday, $19.8 million on Saturday and $15.3 million on Sunday, bringing in a $55 million opening weekend haul.
Foreign numbers stand at $64 million, bringing a worldwide gross of $119 million.
“Given that we are reinventing the X-Men franchise with a critically acclaimed director and top actors who are not really widely known to audiences, we’re hoping to be somewhere around BATMAN BEGINS ($48.7M) and X-MEN ($54.4M). That seems to be a good target area for us.” said a rep for Fox.
The film opened in 3,641 domestic locations, which is fewer than X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE’s 4,099, X2’s 3,741 and X-MEN: THE LAST STAND’s 3,690) but greater than the first X-MEN’s 3,025 according to Box Office Mojo.
We think these numbers are just fine. The film has received rave reviews and is easily one of the best X-MEN films. Success for First Class will come in the long run, rather than up-front.
That’s pretty good considering First Class was released in fewer theatres than Thor, and is not benefiting from the inflated ticket prices of 3D screenings like Thor did. In other words, it is making a fair bit more per theatre than Thor so far, but I agree we need to wait and see how it trends throughout the weekend.
A $69 opening weekend would be really good, but it would sadly be a franchise low for a sequel/prequel/spin-off. It would also be lower than the original if adjusted for inflation. Still good though.
I was going to say that too. First Class isn’t benefiting from higher 3D ticket prices. I’m so glad it wasn’t rushed for a 3D conversion.
Though this film may open lower than previous X-films, I think it will have much stronger legs due to positive word of mouth.
I agree.
No fu#king 3D ever for the X-Men, please. Cameron can stick his 3D into his ### and live happy with it.
Sorry for the Wolverine-style outburst here.
I guess a 70 million weekend is in. But the word of mouth and the positive reactions should help the movie in it’s second week. I suspect it won’t fall as hard as other comicbook based pictures and ease some 40 % instead of the obligatory 50 – 65 %.
A 200 million domestic BO is possible.
I don’t care for 3D unless it’s shot in 3D. All the conversions I’ve seen felt like a waste of extra money.

Memo to FOX: Include Wolverine in the next TV spots and you will get more people to see it… and find out that an X movie can work without him.
And before the fanboys start here… I know: The movie rocks, and yes X-Men is not all about Wolverine… for us! BUT for the average Joe Hugh Jackman is the star of the franchise.
Same problem as with TERMINATOR SALVATION in 2009. The movie worked perfectly without Arnold Schwarzenegger… but the average Joe missed him.
I hope the word of mouth will boost the BO. BATMAN BEGINS also had a 50 million opening weekend, but went on to gross 200 million at the domestic BO.
I will keep my fingers crossed!
I agree with everything you said!
I dont care but I think the opening weekend will be around 65 to 75 million. Im glad it’s not in 3D. Im sick of it. lol. Lots of people say that this is the best X-Men film so far, and the best comic book film since Dark Knight! And I agree. lol 21 million on its openign day isnt that bad. Fox even expect too much big for its opening weekend. But guess what guys, I LOVE the movie, and surely, I will go see it again!
And HEY, can someone UPLOAD the NEW MAGNETO costume that he used at the end of the film???? I LOVE IT, it was so Magneto comic based costume. I wanna see a pic of it. 🙂
This movie is so much better then Dark Knight.
and I saw Thor in 2D, It looked better.
Yeah, Thor got great review too in Rotten tomatoes and I want to see it..
Now let’s see how it holds up against SUPER8. If it does retreat 40 % it should do well.
JJ Abrams is Puke.

Super8 looks great, the producer behind the film is Steven Spielberg for God sake.
Speiberg has not made a good film in 18 years.
That’s not true…
SAVING PRIVATE RYAN (1998)
A.I. (2001)
MUNICH (2005)

yeah. Im excited to hear from Vaugh, Singer, and Fox when is the sequel of XFC????? X-Men First Class is already NUMBER ONE in the Philippines, Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand, UK, Russia, and France!!
$120 Million. Not bad for an opening weekend……Now where do we go from here?!
Well X-Men 4, with a return of the core team I would guess. They already have a story treatment for it and yes, X4 leads into X5.
XFC is still on top!
