Variety: Disney upset about DARK PHOENIX; questioning THE NEW MUTANTS box office potential; figuring out MCU’s DEADPOOL.

Disney is upset about losing money on 20th Century Fox productions that have released since the company’s acquisition of the studio earlier this year. Focusing on DARK PHOENIX, media trade Variety says the film contributed to a $170 million write-down. Could it be because Disney didn’t put much effort in advertising the film after laying off the original marketing team?

Disney did not spend as aggressively to promote the release. One insider says that the film’s lone premiere in Los Angeles was done with an eye to controlling cost — a bit of economizing that annoyed the film’s creative team.

There’s still one film X-Men film under Fox’s umbrella that’s awaiting release. THE NEW MUTANTS is currently slated for theatrical release in 2020, though an insider claims the studio is not super enthused about the film after screening it for executives and there are concerns about its box office potential. New Mutants has seen multiple setbacks with planned reshoots which have yet to take place. According to Variety, filmmakers seeking reshoots for their projects have been asked to submit rigorous storyboards to justify the additional expenses.

The studio is also reportedly trying to decide how Ryan Reynold’s R-rated DEADPOOL will fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Apparently they’re discussing how to retain the merc’s madness while integrating him with other Marvel projects.
