Now that 20th Century Fox/Studio’s THE NEW MUTANTS is back on track, set interviews with the cast and crew from 2017 are finally making their way online.
Digital Spy spoke with director Josh Boone about what connections, if any, the film has to the greater X-Men universe and also interviewed Wolfsbane actress Maisie Williams about her character’s Scottish heritage in the film.
“There’s references and things that happen that are part of the greater whole, but we very much wanted it to tonally and aesthetically stand on its own,” Boone told the site. It’s important to note that recent rumors alluded to the film undergoing editing to remove any X-Men references after Disney’s Fox buyout. We’ll have to wait and see if that’s true.
Describing the look and tone of the film, Boone said: “It’s very grounded and very credible and because we shot it in a real location, it just will never look like a typical comic book movie where there’s a lot of green screen, and everything sort of looks like there’s a painted sheen of CGI across it.
“We’re really going for something not an indie movie, but a little more rough around the edges like that.”
Moving onto Maisie Williams, the actress described the process behind creating her character’s Scottish accent.
“I was written very American because (director Boone) wrote it and he’s been very easy whenever we wanted to change dialogue. I didn’t want to make it cringe and be saying ‘aye’ every now and then. I just wanted to make it an authentic accent.
“(Rahne)’s been here for a little while and the other mutants have been here for a little while, so I think our interpretations of our accents are what we wanted them to be. I went for more of a Highlands accent, although I can tell it sometimes goes a little bit Glasgow, but only people in Scotland would hopefully pick up on that.
“I always knew she was Scottish so even when I read the first draft, I tried to do it in my head in a Scottish accent so you start thinking in the character’s accent.”
The New Mutants arrives in theaters on April 3, 2020.
