DARK PHOENIX writer and director Simon Kinberg wished Jean Grey actress Sophie Turner a Happy Birthday in his Instagram stories with a behind the scenes photo from the film’s original third act. Drawing a Queen’s crown on Turner’s head, Kinberg’s post (thanks to Dark Phoenix: UN Cut for the screengrab) shows her on a rig which gives the effect of her flying using her telekinesis.
The multi-million budgeted sequence left on the editing floor – in favor of what we saw in the theatrical cut – took place during a gathering of world leaders at the United Nations. Attacked by the alien D’bari tribe (originally Skrulls), it’s up to Jean, Cyclops, and Professor X to save the day; leading to Jean flying into space and going supernova against alien ships.
It’s unknown if we’ll ever get to see what Kinberg originally planned for his final X-Men film under 20th Century Fox. As previously reported, the project was intended as a two-part blockbuster before being reduced to a single film by Fox and soon finding themselves under the ownership of Disney and Marvel Studios.
