Rumor: Are existing contracts keeping X-MEN from the MCU until 2025?

Journalist Devin Faraci (via Cinema Sangha) recently made headlines for saying that existing contracts with 20th Century Fox/Studios might keep the X-MEN from fully arriving in the Marvel Cinematic Universe until 2025 (or Phase 7) at the earliest.

“Despite the introduction of mutants at the end of Ms. Marvel, there’s no mutants in Phase 5,” said Faraci. “I know why. I know why there’s no mutants. I know why this is going to take a while. There might be individual mutants, there might be other characters that show a certain interest. The reason why is the contractual situation with the original Fox stuff is going to be in effect until 2025. So, if they don’t want to use those actors, then they have to wait until that contract all expires.”

“If they’re going to have stuff hitting in 2025 at the end of the contract, then they’ll announce it. But I think they actually can’t go into production until the contract’s up. So it’s not even a release – it’s the same thing with Superman. So they’re going to be Phase 7. So you’re not going to see mutants until Phase 7. There are going to be mutants that will show up after the Multiverse Saga is over.”

The Illuminerdi dived further and found that producers like Simon Kinberg and Bryan Singer are contracted and have certain rights to the property, despite Disney’s buyout of Fox. If Disney/Marvel wants to use the characters tied to actors under contract, it’s possible they’ll have to credit the existing producers, and provide compensation for said producers and actors under contract, even potentially allowing the producers to have creative control over the property.

It does make sense, but we suggest taking this with a grain of salt as it’s unknown what is going on behind the scenes. Disney has the means to pay off any respective parties if they think it’s in their best interest. Would Kevin Feige want to work with previous producers? Due to past allegations, we’re assuming Disney/Marvel wants nothing to do with Singer.

It’s possible we’re introduced to mutants other than Jean Grey, Cyclops, Storm, Nightcrawler, Beast and The New Mutants until those options open up. Of course, having Sophie Turner and Anya Taylor-Joy comeback as Jean Grey and Magik, respectively, wouldn’t be so bad!
