Speaking with Entertainment Weekly on their Awardist Podcast, actor Ryan Reynolds said with glee that Marvel Studios is “obsessed” with Channing Tatum’s performance as Gambit. The Deadpool & Wolverine actor was a strong talking point of the film amongst the public, so it’s a wonder what they’ll do with him moving forward.
“I honestly don’t know what goes on behind closed doors in the bookkeeping sessions at Marvel, but I do know that they’re obsessed with him in that role,” he said. “It’s kind of like the same situation I went through. Once you show that it works well, that’s really what they need. Sometimes they just need to see it in action.”
Tatum had been developing a Gambit film under (then) 20th Century Fox for years before the studio and the X-Men rights were acquired by Disney. While his solo project went kaput for a variety of reasons, it was nice to see the him finally put on Remy LeBeau’s costume.
A variety of characters from different universes will likely be utilized in Avengers: Doomsday and (particularly) Avengers: Secret Wars. If Tatum were to show up again, these seem like the likely candidates.
If Marvel decides they want to go long-term with his Gambit, there may be a role for him in the X-Men film currently being written by Michael Lesslie.
Deadpool & Wolverine is now available on Digital HD, 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD.
