For over two decades, fans of the X-Men film franchise have wondered whether James Marsden would ever don the visor again. As Scott Summers, aka Cyclops, Marsden helped define the early 2000s era of superhero cinema. Now, with Avengers: Doomsday set to collide Marvel’s multiverses into a cinematic event, Marsden is officially back, and he couldn’t be more thrilled.
“I was excited because you’re part of something gigantic,” Marsden told Vanity Fair in a recent interview. “And I’ve spent 20 years listening to people say, ‘When are you coming back? When are you coming back? Are you coming back?’ I’m dead. Well, maybe not.” That last line speaks to the shifting rules of comic book storytelling, where no one stays dead forever, especially in the age of multiversal madness.
The actor’s return feels not just like fan service, but a full-circle moment in his career. “So it’s been a blast. It really has,” Marsden continued. “It’s been a nice little homecoming to a role that really put me on the map.” First appearing as Cyclops in 2000’s X-Men, Marsden was a key player in launching the modern superhero genre. The 20th Century franchise’s massive success laid the groundwork for the Marvel Cinematic Universe that followed, and now, Marsden gets to re-enter that world on an even bigger stage under Marvel Studios.
“It was the first real event project that I was ever part of, and a very beloved character, this icon from the comics,” he said, noting the lasting impact of the role. “And so to step back into that role was pretty special.” For Marsden, Cyclops wasn’t just a character, he was a milestone and a breakthrough.
Of course, returning to superhero form after 20 years isn’t without its challenges. Marsden joked, “I’m going to have a tough time struggling to get into costume if they waited a couple more years.” But clearly, he made it work, and we’re already buzzing with anticipation about what his return entails.
With Avengers: Doomsday promising to be the biggest crossover event in Marvel history, Marsden’s reprisal as Cyclops isn’t just a nostalgic nod, it’s a signal that the mutants are finally stepping into the spotlight again. And for longtime fans, seeing James Marsden back in the role is both a reward and a reunion.
