More than a decade after his debut as Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Taylor Kitsch has finally addressed the character’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and how he feels about being replaced by Channing Tatum.

Kitsch, who portrayed the Cajun mutant in the 2009 film, appeared as a key supporting character helping Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine locate Three Mile Island. Despite the movie’s mixed reception, Kitsch’s take on Gambit remains memorable to many fans. However, his turn as the card-slinging mutant would be short-lived.

Originally, Channing Tatum had been eyed for the role of Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine but was forced to back out due to scheduling conflicts. Now, years later, Tatum has finally made his mark on the Marvel world, appearing as Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine and reportedly returning in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.

During a recent interview with Screenrant for his upcoming series The Terminal List: Dark Wolf, Kitsch was asked directly about Tatum’s version of the character. He revealed that he hasn’t seen it and emphasized that there are no hard feelings. “Gambit wasn’t in the cards for me,” Kitsch said, cleverly playing on the character’s signature move. He added that he’s happy with where his career has taken him and is focused on roles that challenge him and allow him to grow as an actor.

When pressed further on whether he’d ever consider returning to the Marvel universe, Kitsch didn’t close the door entirely. “Never say never,” he admitted, while quickly shifting the conversation toward his next project, 11 Days in Hell, a historical drama based on an intense real-life standoff in a Texas prison in 1974.

Ultimately, Kitsch’s reflections reveal an actor at peace with his past and confident in his current trajectory. Though his time as Gambit may have been brief, it’s clear that his career is anything but. And as the Marvel universe continues to expand, fans will always remember the charm and flair Kitsch brought to the role, even if the deck has since been reshuffled.
