Channing Tatum is finally getting the chance to bring Gambit to life in Marvel’s upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, but don’t expect him to recycle the exaggerated Louisiana accent heard in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly at the Toronto International Film Festival, Tatum revealed that nailing Gambit’s voice has been one of his biggest challenges. “The accent’s a tough one,” he admitted. “It’s hard to explain that to someone that isn’t from the South, isn’t from Louisiana. My dad’s from New Orleans. I’ve been around. That accent has a big spectrum. You cannot understand ’em at all, and you can understand ’em at times. So you have to really play with it.”
Tatum, who is also at TIFF to promote his new project Roofman, explained that he had to convince Marvel he could balance Gambit’s unique charm with the demands of a blockbuster ensemble film. “I had to really show them that you can still play comedy, you can still play drama,” he said. “There’s a lot of exposition that has to happen in those movies, and you can even do that. So it’s been a strange but really gratifying thing.”
The actor described the process as both frustrating and rewarding, likening it to years of persistence finally paying off. “When you’re trying to shove a square peg for so long and then finally it just goes [through], then you’re like, ‘Yes! Alright! Cool. We’re off and running now.’ So it’s fun.”
Tatum also confirmed that he still has more scenes left to film for Avengers: Doomsday, keeping excitement high for those eager to see his return as the fan-favorite mutant card-thrower.
