X-Men Films And Superhero Entertainment News — Trailers, Industry Coverage, Reviews, Original Comics: SUPER (2025-), Mutant Fandom And More

When The New Mutants (2020) finally reached theaters, it stood out from the rest of the X-Men franchise by leaning into psychological horror. Instead of glossy superhero spectacle, it gave us something closer to a haunted-house thriller with mutant powers. While its release was messy, the concept was exciting, and many fans have wondered ever since what a sequel could have looked like.

A follow-up could have doubled down on the horror. The first film flirted with supernatural scares through Dani’s fear-projection abilities, but a second chapter could have gone darker. The team might find themselves pulled into cursed towns, sinister labs, or even other dimensions where their own abilities make them more vulnerable than powerful. Illyana’s ties to Limbo could drag everyone into a nightmare realm. Dani could lose control of her psychic illusions again, forcing her friends to experience new nightmares. Rahne could battle visions of religious damnation, while Sam might be trapped in claustrophobic “burial” scenarios that his cannonball powers can’t escape. Even Roberto could face fiery manifestations of guilt and shame. Each of them has fears that would furter feed a horror-driven story.

The choice of villain would be key in keeping that tone. A resurrected Demon Bear could stalk the team again in a more terrifying form. The Shadow King, a psychic parasite who thrives on nightmares, could use Dani as his way in. Belasco could arrive from Limbo to torment Illyana and drag the others into his twisted world. The Right, with their grotesque cyborg enhancements, could bring a flavor of body horror to the mix. Or The Adversary, a chaos entity tied to Native American legend, could anchor the film in mythic terror while pushing Dani’s heritage and arc further into focus.

Of course, sequels thrive on new blood, and the New Mutants have no shortage of options. Warlock, the techno-organic alien, could bring surreal body-horror visuals and an eerie sci-fi edge. Laura (formerly X-23), could be a fierce new member with an attitude to match. Karma, with her mind-possession powers, could channel possession-style scares. Magma could erupt onto the screen with destructive volcanic powers that tie into elemental and ancient horror themes. Boom-Boom could add levity with her sarcastic edge and explosive abilities, while Cypher’s power to understand any language could take a chilling turn when applied to cursed texts or demonic runes. Adding these characters would both expand the team and deepen the horror vibe.

What makes the idea of a sequel so enticing is that The New Mutants had the potential to stand apart from the larger X-Men universe. Instead of competing with blockbuster spectacle, it could have been a smaller, genre-driven series: a mutant coming-of-age story wrapped in supernatural horror. By building on the original cast’s fears, introducing strange new teammates, and unleashing villains like Belasco or the Shadow King, the sequel could have cemented the team’s unique identity. Even though it never happened, the “what if?” continues to live on, and maybe one day Marvel will revisit what made The New Mutants stand out in the first place.
