Few characters in modern pop culture carry the weight that Wolverine does. For over two decades, Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of Logan helped define the superhero genre, anchoring Fox’s X-Men franchise through its highs, lows, and reinventions. Now, with the X-Men officially under the Marvel Studios umbrella, the question isn’t if Wolverine will return, it’s how.
Recent multiversal storytelling, combined with Marvel Studios’ careful long-term planning, opens the door to several fascinating avenues for a live-action Wolverine project, whether for film, Disney+, or a hybrid approach. Here’s a breakdown of the most realistic directions Marvel Studios could take.
Keeping Hugh Jackman in the Role
Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine is one of the rare superhero performances that transcended the material. For many fans, he is Logan. Marvel Studios is well aware of this cultural attachment, and recent multiverse-focused projects have shown a clear willingness to preserve legacy portrayals when they serve the story.
Keeping Jackman around doesn’t mean undoing the finality of Logan (2017). Marvel could use the variant Wolverine seen in Deadpool & Wolverine, possibly positioning his character as a mentor or supporting figure, limiting his appearances to special events or crossover stories.
This approach allows Marvel to honor the past while carefully transitioning toward the future, which is a strategy they’ve successfully used with characters like Spider-Man villains and legacy heroes.
The challenge? Age and longevity. Wolverine is traditionally a long-term, front-facing character, and Jackman’s era can’t realistically anchor the MCU for the next decade.
Making Dafne Keen’s Laura the MCU’s Wolverine
If Marvel Studios is looking for a bold but grounded evolution, Laura Kinney may be the answer.
Dafne Keen’s performance in Logan was widely praised, and her character already embodies many of Wolverine’s core traits. Elevating Laura as the MCU’s Wolverine would preserve continuity from Logan, introduce a younger, long-term character into the MCU, and align with Marvel’s growing ephasis on legacy heroes.
Importantly, Laura is Wolverine in the comics. She’s not a replacement, but a continuation of the mantle. This path allows Marvel to move forward without erasing Logan’s legacy.
The potential drawback is fan perception. Some audiences may resist the idea of Wolverine without Logan, despite Laura’s canonical importance. Marvel would need careful storytelling to make this transition feel earned rather than abrupt.
Recasting the Role Completely
This is the cleanest option, but also maybe the riskiest. Recasting Logan allows Marvel Studios to fully integrate Wolverine into the MCU’s core narrative from the ground up. A new actor could be introduced early in the Mutant Saga, appearing across multiple films and series alongside characters like Jean Grey, Cyclops, and Storm.
This route aligns with how Marvel and DC handled characters like Spider-Man and Batman, where reinterpretation becomes accepted.
However, Hugh Jackman’s shadow looms large. Any new actor will face immediate comparisons, and Marvel Studios would need to differentiate this Logan significantly, possibly leaning harder into an actor with a shorter, more comic-accurate physicality. A rougher, more feral personality wouldn’t hurt either. As X-Men ’97 handled perfectly, a deeper integration with team dynamics rather than a focus on solo/lead adventures.
Recasting While Keeping Hugh Jackman Around
This may be the most Marvel Studios solution of all. Thanks to the multiverse, and especially the tonal freedom of the Deadpool corner of the MCU, Marvel could have its cake and eat it too.
In this scenario, a new actor plays the MCU’s primary Wolverine, with Hugh Jackman’s Logan existing alongside or in an alternate universe. Jackman could still appear in crossover events, Deadpool projects, or future multiverse stories.
This approach accomplishes several things at once. It preserves Jackman’s iconic version without limiting future storytelling, allowing audiences time to adjust to a new Wolverine. The situation could also be used in a humorous way, adding to meta-commentary by Deadpool to ease the transition. It also mirrors Marvel’s broader strategy: honoring legacy while investing in longevity.
Marvel Studios is uniquely positioned to redefine Wolverine without diminishing what came before, whether they lean into reinvention, legacy, or a multiversal blend. As a cornerstone of the X-Men mythos, how Marvel chooses to handle him will say a lot about how they plan to usher mutants into the MCU for the next generation.
