X-Men Films And Superhero Entertainment News — Trailers, Industry Coverage, Reviews, Original Comics: SUPER (2025-), Mutant Fandom And More

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe barrels toward the multiversal chaos of Avengers: Doomsday and the inevitable fallout of Secret Wars, one question lingers: who (if anybody) gets to stick around when the MCU renews and the X-Men are reborn? With legacy actors returning for what could be one last ride, Marvel Studios has a golden opportunity to honor the past while carefully choosing which familiar faces might carry forward into the future.

Let’s start with the heart and soul of the X-Men: Sir Patrick Stewart as Professor Charles Xavier. Stewart’s portrayal is nothing short of an iconic role across decades. While a full-time continuation is not be necessary in a rebooted universe, there’s a case for him to survive in some capacity, perhaps as a multiversal constant. If anyone deserves to transcend timelines, it’s Stewart’s Professor X.

On the opposite end of that philosophical coin is Sir Ian McKellen as Magneto. McKellen’s layered performance turned Erik Lehnsherr into one of comic book cinema’s greatest antagonists. Much like Stewart, his Magneto feels larger than any one timeline. Keeping him around post-Secret Wars could provide a powerful bridge between the old guard and whatever comes next. Of course, the ages of Stewart and McKellen are a factor to consider, but if they’re down for additional appearance, why not?

Then there’s James Marsden as Cyclops, a character who never quite got his due in the original X-Men films. Avengers: Doomsday could finally give Scott Summers the spotlight he deserves, showcasing his tactical brilliance. If Marvel is looking to carry forward one of these legacy mutants into the reboot era in a more central role, Marsden’s Cyclops is a compelling choice. A redeemed and fully realized Cyclops could anchor the next era of X-Men storytelling.

Shape-shifting into the conversation is Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, whose cool, calculating presence made her a standout in the early films. Mystique is a character who thrives in the shadows, making her perfect for a post-Secret Wars world filled with uncertainty. Romijn sporadically slipping back into the role could be fun, especially if Marvel leans into espionage-driven mutant stories.

One of the most unexpected yet exciting additions: Channing Tatum as Gambit. After years of development limbo, Tatum finally stepping into the role feels like a payoff long in the making. Gambit is a fan-favorite with endless potential, and unlike some of the legacy cast, he hasn’t been fully explored on screen yet outside of his appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine. Keeping Tatum’s Gambit around post-reboot, and finding a Rogue that could match, could give Marvel a fresh-but-familiar face to build around.

And of course, we can’t forget Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler. His portrayal in X2 remains one of the most beloved performances in the entire franchise. Nightcrawler offers something truly special to the MCU. Bringing Cumming back, and letting him continue beyond Secret Wars, would be a chance to further explore Kurt Wagner in ways we’ve only scratched the surface of.

Ultimately, Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars aren’t just about massive battles and universe-shattering stakes. These actors helped define the X-Men on screen, and whether they stay or pass the torch, their presence matters. If Marvel Studios plays its cards right, it can honor some of these legends while setting the stage for a bold, mutant-filled future.
