DC Studios and HBO Max unveiled the official trailer for LANTERNS last Friday, offering a good look at the upcoming live-action series centered on Green Lanterns. Starring Kyle Chandler as the veteran Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as rookie Lantern John Stewart, the new footage finally shows some of the emerald-powered action many have been waiting to see. The teaser continues to lean into the show’s grounded mystery-thriller tone while still embracing the mythology of DC’s Green Lantern Corps.
The series follows Jordan and Stewart as two intergalactic peacekeepers investigating a dark mystery tied to Earth, with the story unfolding across dual timelines set in 2016 and 2026. The latest teaser hints at conspiracies, and growing tensions between the experienced Jordan and the younger Stewart, while also teasing appearances from familiar DC characters. Additional cast members include Nathan Fillion, Kelly Macdonald, Laura Linney, Ulrich Thomsen, Garret Dillahunt, and Poorna Jagannathan.
Creatively, Lanterns is being spearheaded by showrunner Chris Mundy, who developed the series alongside Damon Lindelof and acclaimed comic writer Tom King. The trio has described the project as a grounded detective drama inspired by series like True Detective, while still honoring the larger-scale sci-fi elements of the Green Lantern mythos. Directed in part by James Hawes. James Gunn and Peter Safran serve as executive producers.
Lanterns premieres August 16 on HBO Max.
