Director James Mangold exclusively told Empire Magazine, during an interview, featured in their current issue, that THE WOLVERINE will take place after the original X-MEN trilogy. We’ll still get pieces of his past, as Logan is seen, with bone claws, as prisoner of war in WWII Japan.
“Where this film sits in the universe of the films is after them all.” said Mangold. “Jean Grey is gone, most of the X-Men are disbanded or gone, so there’s a tremendous sense of isolation for him. That’s something that for me was very important, that I land in a very specific place in his timeline. I wanted to be able to tell the story without the burden of handing it off to a film that already exists and having to conform to it.”
“The ideas of immortality reign very heavily in this story and the burden of immortality weighs heavily on Logan.” he continues. “For me that’s such an interesting part of Logan’s character that is nearly impossible to explore if you have a kind of league or team movie.”
Lends more credibility to those Famke Janssen rumors. Filming is nearing it’s completion in just a couple weeks and going into post for a July 26, 2013 release.

And therefore, ladies and gentlemen, is your answer to why Famke was in Sydeny 😀
But I think, that this film will portray Jean GRey as a halluincation…Like a mentl block for Logan…..
What do you thinkk?
Are they sure about this? A director is under contract not to reveal too much, In the Comics, Logan in Japan takes place early in the X-Men’s history. Before the Phoenix saga. and we still have X-Men; Days of Future Past with it;s possible time altering story to look at.
You and I know very well that directors mix things up… 😛
No, we do not know that. That is arrogant thinking, and we do not know anything more at this point beyound what Mangold said. Wolverine may well lead to Days of Future Past, which if it follows time travel, may well wipe X3 from existence.
I think many fans would not mind if the events of X3 were erased. No one really liked that film. If it is written and acted right, both Wolverine and X-Men Days of Future Past could heal the damage done by that idiot, Brent Ratner.
It may even be that the main character that is the focus of both movies is Logan himself.
The screenplay for the Wolverine sounds like it is in three acts. We know part of the movie will take place during World War II when Logan was in the US army. The bulk of the second act of the movie will likely be when Logan goes to Japan after the loss of his memory. The final act will be Logan in the future, mourning the loss of the X-Men, but also perhaps finding a way on how the damage can be repaired, aka Days of Future Past.
I knew it.
Jean will be a hallucination or dream of some sort (like Ras Al Ghul was in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES). Great choice to set it AFTER all the films. I guess DAYS will pick up some themes from WOLVERINE then.
Exactly what I said 😛
what Is likely happening Is we will start with Wolverine In wWII.Then jump to Wolverine post Last Stand In canada with beard and mourning her.He goes to Japan where rest of film takes place.Famke Jannsen appears In eather dream or halluncation of Wolverine’s In Japan. The ending could have wolverine returning to US.
Now everything was cleared! Give me chills and excitement but i don’t like that lines “Most X-men are disbanded or gone”.. i still want X-men 4 you know..
I reckon and am hoping this will ALL come together, much like the paranormal activity series haha
lol
