The latest issue of Empire Magazine has an article on X-MEN: FIRST CLASS and inside are a few details on the characters in the film. One bit on the character of Banshee has me doing the facepalm. Apparently he’s American in this film.
Transcribed via Comic Book Movies:
On Caleb landry Jones as Banshee/Sean Cassidy…
An Irishman with a sonic scream in the comics, Jones’ Cassidy is a young American here, the big lungs remain intact”
Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique…
Magneto’s future accomplice starts off as Charles’ BFF, shapeshifting into human form. “This is before her Rebecca Romijn mutant and proud days” laughs Lawrence
Rose Byrne as Dr Moira MacTaggert…
The only human in the group, Moira is the team’s link with the CIA. “I love the idea of it being in the 60s” says Byrne. “It gives it a twinkle in the eye”
Nicholas Hoult as Beast/Hank McCoy…
The team’s resident boffin, before his mutation later in the film as the big, blue bouncing Beast.”He’s very urbane and witty” says Hoult
James McAvoy as Charles Xavier…
“He’s not a monk” says McAvoy, “He enjoys a drink, he’s a sex pest! But you start to see his ego break down.”
If the magazine is correct and Banshee’s American, does the same go for Moira MacTaggert who’s Scottish in the comics and (thankfully) had an accent in X3? The X-Men films have been a bit wobbly in keeping their character accents in check, so we’ll have to wait and see.
Escuse me if i sound rude but hear this….it doesn,t matter if Banshee is irish or not the important thing that he is on the list there,s nothing they can do about it is cool of this character is cool now so doesn,t matter who he is, like huge Jackman is austrian and is wolverine doesn,t matter the important this is they are in good hands in the movie that,s the important thing ok no problem
Hugh Jackman is Australian but they didn’t give Wolverine an Australian accent. My complaint is that they’re supposedly not giving Banshee an Irish accent and making his nationality American. I have no problem with the actor being American, but I prefer for the character’s nationality to remain intact.
That seems a pointless arguement.
So, This Banshee is an American? or he still can portray it as an Irish?
Okay so let me get this straight with this movie because I’m starting to lose a little faith.
Caleb Jones(American): Banshee is not Irish but an American, maybe he plays an Irish-American? Saving face here.
Rose Byrne (Australian): Plays Moira MacTaggert who is Scottish and works for the CIA? She’s pretty good with accents overall, her American, English and Canadian accents are spot on. So maybe she’ll use a Scottish accent and protect some integrity of the character.
Nicholas Hoult (English): He’ll probably use his native accent for the role.
James McAvoy (Scottish): Charles Xavier is American so he’ll use an American accent. Hopefully he helped Rose with the Scottish brogue.
I’ll have to say this sure is a creative film…
Jennifer Lawrence (American): Character American
By the way Anthony, love your video introducing the cast and characters. One of the best X-men videos I’ve seen in awhile. Well done!
Colossus didnt have a Russian accent and Pyro didnt have an australian accent in the X-flims. So does it really surprise anyone that Banshee doesnt?
beacuse thet changed the characters naonaliy to american and didn’t keep them the sae
Anthony u shoot me down it means that in ur first post u where right i about the language of Huge Jackman so i have nothing to said cause everything is ok so u clear me very well so thank u in ur words so is totaly clear on this so i,ve be waiting for the next news so thank u so much i be in touch my men
escuse me for the the (i) the i is my mistake what im trying to said is
Anthony u shoot me down it means that in ur first post u clear me everything is ok about the language of Huge Jackman as Banshee as well so i have nothing to said cause everything is ok so i,ve be waiting for the next more news so thank u for that later soon my men
This whole article is pointless.
Meh. Just like all the other characters in this film series, being stripped of their heritages. keeping it “Americanized” Bleh. Count me out. Call me when Banshee is Irish again. Casting a ginger in the role does not make up for lack of heritage.
Why is this Robert guy so negative all the time? This article is not pointless at all. If you’re to criticize everything then why are you even at this site?
Moplaya makes a good point cos I forgot that Pyro nor Colossus had accents in X2, and I still ended up loving the film…so I doubt Banshee not having an accent will ruin the film, however I do understand where Anthony is coming from and I too wish the films would the comics justice.
hey were is the countdown util xmenfirstclass..?
how manya days are left..?
He’s back…? Eh…
Anyway…They probably didn’t have Banshee have an accent because first, the production time is waaay tight, second, if Banshee were to have an accent, that would make him interesting, and he’s more than likely just a background character in this film.
Well I don’t want to sound not interested but does it really count?
I knw this is a XMEN site, but if you guys saw Iron Man 2, Scarleet Johanson who played the Back widow AKA Natalie the assintant to the assiantant didn’t have a russian accent.
There are bits that the producers just can’t fit it.
I mean they cant stick to it all!
WHAT AM I SAYING!
THATS BULL*****
What is wrong with them!
LOl
The only reason thats true is they hanged the nationality from the respective to american to get non-comic fans interested
Yup it’s true guys Marvel felt Banshee’s IRISH accent and heritage would annoy the viewers. Lol I’m just surprised they didnt make him into a black guy (not being racist just stating marvel doesnt hold to the traditions of the original creators) Marvel is well known for selling out movie theaters and its own companies pride/tradition and respect for the original creators.
