Hugh Jackman isn’t 100% certain that he’ll film a third WOLVERINE movie yet, but if he does, he’s 99.9% sure that it will be his last (solo or general?) outing as the character.
“I don’t know yet,” he said when asked by SFX Magazine about the developing project with THE WOLVERINE director James Mangold. “We’re talking it through. I still am very ambitious for the character. And tonally I feel like we corrected the ship with the last one. But I feel we can still go further, in a way. If I did another one I’m 99.9% sure it would be the last, so that will inform what it is for me.”
He says that he’s “pretty sure” the next film would move away from the Japan setting, and that he has found some interest in the “Old Man Logan” storyline, because “that may be the only option left at this point [laughs]. We are looking at a lot of different storylines. No one has jumped out. You can tell from my answer that we’re still working it out. I’m working with Jim Mangold, which is exciting. Jim came on board The Wolverine after Darren [Aronofsky] left, so he inherited it. And of all the things that Jim can do, one of the great things he does is develop scripts. I’m excited to see what we can come up with, but I haven’t signed on. I’m genuinely at that point where unless it’s better than the last one I’m not going to do it.”
And what if the script is just as good as his last film? “If the script is as good? Hm. I don’t know if that will get me across the line, man. I think it has to be better. I can still see where we can improve on the last one. I love the intimacy of that story, I liked the small stuff, I liked that it was a little unexpected. I don’t want to get into specifics, because it just upsets people, but there are certain parts of that story where I felt we were predictable. And I don’t think you need to do that with Wolverine. What’s exciting is that you can make it a more interior story, and people actually prefer that. And that was good to show and convince everyone – especially everyone who greenlights the movies!”
Hugh means business! The script has to be solid to get his seal of approval.
They aren’t counting Wolverine Origins as the first film are they?
Whether it’s popular or not, Origins is canon to the series. Hell, even The Wolverine referenced it by having Kayla’s voice echo through Logan’s mind when he was waking up in Yashida’s giant robot chamber.
Honestly, I think the film is a little underrated, tbh. It’s not great by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. It’s disrespectful to the source material, but as a film it’s decent.
Looks like they are because this would be the 3rd solo logan film.
ok i honestly do not see how they could call it wolverine 3 if hugh likes what he sees, hears and does happen, the wolverine was suppose to be a sequel to the 2009’s x-men origins: wolverine but according to what i heard, they decided not to make it a sequel which doesnt really make sense, they made the wolverine out to be that wolverine left the x-men team itsself and became a wonderer which from what i understand was before he even joined the team, if they do make another wolverine stand-alone and call it 3, thats gonna be confusing, i do hope they make another film but just not call it wolverine 3 if they didnt call the wolverine wolverine 2, i am a big fan of hugh’s i love his performence as wolverine after hes played it for so long, he practically owns the role itself and for as long as hes played it, i dont think i could see anybody else do the job like he does
I just want them to go ahead with what they planned originally with The Wolverine and include Rogue in this movie.
“The Wolverine” is not a sequel to “X-Men Origins : Wolverine”. The James Mangold film takes place after the events of “X-Men : The Last Stand”. Back in 2009, Fox decided to create a Wolverine spin-off/origin but turned out it wasn’t that much of an origin film really. Only one scene from Logan’s childhood was featured and the rest is about meeting his first love, Kyla and how adamantum was bonded into his skeleton. Also in the 2009 movie, Stryker’s Team X is featured that included Deadpool who becomes the antagonist in the finale. Another is the introduction of Gambit who is one of the escapees in Stryker island. There was also a young Cyclops, Emma Frost (Kyla’s younger sis) being taken in the end by Professor X. Overall, 2009’s “X-Men Origins : Wolverine” was not really a solo Wolverine movie. Neither was it an origin movie either.
As long as they could put Rogue in one of the film and X-23.. it will be awesome..
