The folks over at Schmoes Know have revealed that director Tim Miller and writers were able to get the DEADPOOL screenplay down to a PG-13 rating, which ultimately led to 20th Century Fox greenlighting the film. The original script by “Zombieland” writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick was hard-R, borderlining NC-17 and featured what you come to expect with the intense “merc with a mouth” character. But Fox is obviously thinking about financials and what-not. Having a PG-13 “Deadpool” will certainly put more butts in theater seats and give a chance for younger fans to see the film without parental supervision.
The site says: “I heard from the director that they finally figured out the script, and it was right before this was announced, that they figured out, and you guys are all gonna hate this, they figured out how to make it PG-13. And therefore “not lose its soul”, and that’ a quote, of the script so that they can make it.”
Last year Ryan Reynold’s said in support of an R rating: “I love Deadpool and there is a script that’s in development. But it’s so, so far into the R-rated zone… it’s a nearly NC-17 world and I just don’t know if the studio would ever risk their reputation doing it. We’ve been developing it and we would never wanna do it unless you could it that R-rated way.”
Chances are we’ll get the unrated version on Blu-ray/DVD anyways…
Thanks to Josh Wilding at Comic Book Movies for the heads up!
Update: Writer Rhett Reese tweets that “no one knows yet whether Dpool will be R or PG-13,” and and says “There may not be an announcement for a long while.”
Hey, guys, no one knows yet whether Dpool will be R or PG-13. There may not be an announcement for a long while. Hang in!

In my opinion, its for the best, the film would lose potential viewers (aka the kids and their parents) for seeing the film with a Restricted-18 rating.
Go for a PG13 Rating in Theaters and then go THE WOLVERINE way, and get out the R-Rating as an unrated Special Edition Blu Ray. Everyone will be happy.
Yeah, not surprising.
There’s just more money to be had from the wider audience that a PG-13 movie can bring in.
Deadpool doesn’t need to R either (though it would have been cool, and ballsy), let’s not forget that Joe Kelly’s run on the book could hardly be described as R-Rated, and it’s definitive.
But maybe they’ll do an extended cut like they did for The Wolverine, as many have suggested.
