Celebrating X-Men Films And Beyond

Fox negotiating with Marvel for live-action X-MEN series.

The X-Men are coming to TV…maybe! Fox entertainment co-chairman Gary Newman revealed to TV Insider that the network is in the process of developing a live-action, primetime ‘X-Men’ series.

But wait…does Fox even have television rights to the mutant characters? Their sister production company 20th Century Fox only has film rights and things get tricky when going the television route. Marvel needs to sign-off on the idea before Fox can proceed with production. “It’s in negotiations,” Newman confirms. “We’re cautiously optimistic, we had a good meeting with them. [The show] will not be on a fast track creatively. This is just the deal, now we have to find the creative [team].”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a creative team is already in place. ’24’ producers Evan Katz and Manny Coto will be the showrunners, along with ‘Star Trek 3’ writing duo Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne, who will receive a “created by” credit.

If approved, the show likely won’t be ready before the 2016-17 TV season.

Last April, X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST writer and producer Simon Kinberg hinted at the possibility of a show, saying “We’re still in this place of figuring out what the future of the franchise will be, but when you look at S.H.I.E.L.D. to some extent and what Marvel is doing now with Daredevil and other shows on Netflix, it makes sense to tell some of these stories in TV.”
