Why X-MEN: APOCALYPSE isn’t rebooting mutant characters.

LookingOn

X-MEN: APOCALYPSE will provide insight into the origins of the original X-Men trinity, which includes Storm, Jean Grey and Cyclops. Despite the time-altering events of ‘Days of Future Past,’ co-writer Michael Dougherty told Cinema Blend that this new timeline will not drastically alter the characters pasts or who they are ultimately supposed to become.

“I think they aren’t changing as much as you’re getting a peek into a portion of their lives you’ve simply never seen on the big screen,” he said. “By the time you meet that trio at the beginning of X1 through X3, they are exactly who you think they should be. Cyclops is the leader. Jean Grey is a confident woman, but is struggling with her powers, and Storm is this enigmatic weather goddess. But we’ve never seen the characters at the earlier stages in their lives, at this very sort of raw and not yet formed period.”

Instead of doing a full-on reboot, the creative team very much considers ‘Apocalypse’ as showcasing actors Alexandra Shipp, Sophie Turner and Tye Sheridan as the younger versions of characters played by Halle Berry, Famke Janssen and James Marsden, respectively.

“We all know where it is that they need to head, and we all know the characters they become, so this is really sort of showing us how they got there.”

The film hits theaters on May 27, 2016.
