X-Men producer Simon Kinberg recently had a chat with Flickering Myth about the status of Channing Tatum’s developing GAMBIT solo picture. After original director Rupert Wyatt bowed out, production was set to film in New Orleans this June with new director Doug Liman. But Kinberg confirms that filming (and the film’s release date) have been pushed back indefinitely.
βWeβve got to get the script right,β admitted Kinberg. βWe just didnβt get the script to the place where we all thought the movie deserved. So weβre still working on the script. Weβre very close, actually, to being done with the script. And the hope is that Channing has a couple of movies he has to shoot, but that we would shoot at the end of this year, or the beginning of next year.
βItβs looking really good. Iβm not going to say anything about it content-wise. I think one of the things that Iβve learnt on all these movies β and maybe the lesson was best learned for me on Deadpool β is the most important thing is getting the tone and the voice right. That the storytelling, the actual narrative, the plots are sort of interchangeable and disposable, ultimately.β
On getting the tone and voice of Gambit right, he says βIf I ask you what your favorite movies are, youβre not going to tell me about the plot. Youβre going to tell me you love this character. And so what weβve really tried to do with Gambit is make sure that we get the voice of that character right and the tone of the comics 100% on the page. Itβs a very unique tone. Itβs unique from Deadpool, itβs unique from the X-Men. Itβs a heist movie that weβve never done in these kinds of films before. Heβs a con-man. And so thatβs really where weβve spent our time.β
Kinberg assures that when Gambit makes his way to the big screen, it’ll (with all intent) be done the right way.
βThere was a moment when we were going to shoot the movie at the beginning of this year, and then we felt like it just wasnβt ready. Knowing, hoping, that Gambit is like what Deadpool was β the start of a new franchise within the X-Men universe β we want to make sure we get it right.β
