Celebrating X-Men Films And Beyond

CinemaCon: Deadpool and Hugh Jackman interact. Plus: DARK PHOENIX logo revealed.

20th Century Fox held its CinemaCon presentation today in Las Vegas and DEADPOOL 2 started things out with a live cabaret musical dance. “How is everyone doing at this self-congratulatory orgy?” he quipped to the audience on the big screen. “Enjoy your excuse to cheat on your spouse on the company dime.”

Later, the Merc with a Mouth joked with Hugh Jackman indirectly about Disney’s future acquisition of the studio, saying “Comcast really dodged a bullet with that one, right?” Will this be the only time the two interact or is there something more in store for DP2? That remains to be seen.

One thing’s for sure, director David Leitch’s film is tracking to open huge. Early industry (via Deadline) estimates indicate an opening anywhere between $100M and $150M,

After a showing of the recently-released trailer, CEO Stacy Snider spoke briefly about the likely Disney merger, saying “Today, we face a new transition, a potential merger, that will have implications for the movie business. I have no more insight into this transaction than you do. We’ve been making movies and memories for nearly 85 years. We took chances, pushed boundaries, and forged the future of the film business.”

A nearly 15-minute montage clip then showed the studio’s greatest accomplishments, which likely included clips from their X-Men film franchise.

Omega Underground webmaster Caleb Williams notes that a “Montage of 2019 Fox film title cards [were] shown including DARK PHOENIX (No X-Men in title) and THE NEW MUTANTS.” According to him, the “X” in “Dark Phoenix” was “circled and red.”

The logo itself leaked online, although we’re unsure who took the photo. Press in attendance were not supposed to take photos during the video presentation, but thanks to the person that did!
