Director David Leitch’s DEADPOOL 2 arrived in theaters with a smashing $301.3 million estimated worldwide haul, making it 20th Century Fox’s second largest opening of all time (not considering price inflation).
According to Box Office Mojo, the film brought in $125 million domestically, which is a bit short of the first’s $132.4 million take in 2016.
It scored an impressive “A” Cinemascore and is 83% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, which, interestingly enough, matches the first film. The audience skewed a bit older for this than with the first; possibly due to unaware parents now realizing this isn’t a Marvel Studios family friendly release? In terms of gender lines, it played 61% male and 39% female.
The Merc will face competition next weekend with “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” which opens in over 4,2000 theaters. There’s also the continuing competition from Disney’s “Avengers: Infinity War.”
Internationally, DP2 brought in an estimated $176.3 million from 81 foreign markets, which is a record for the studio in Mexico ($10m), India ($6.29m), Indonesia ($4.7m), Thailand ($3.4m), Vietnam ($2m) and Chile ($1.9m). The film has not been given a release date (yet) in China, the world’s second largest market.
