Celebrating The Continuing Legacy Of X-Men Films • Covering Our Most-Anticipated Genre Film And TV Projects

TCA: FX’s LEGION ends with season 3; Producer updates on THE NEW MUTANTS, GAMBIT and future of X-MEN under Disney.

Longtime X-MEN producer Lauren Shuler Donner appeared at TCA in Pasadena, CA Tuesday for FX’s LEGION panel. Here are some of the updates that came from that event (via Deadline), including new details on THE NEW MUTANTS, GAMBIT and other genre projects in-development at 20th Century Fox that may be affected by Disney’s upcoming acquisition this Summer.

LEGION

During the panel it was revealed that this will be Legion’s third and final season. Showrunner Noah Hawley reportedly always envisioned the show in three parts with a beginning, middle and end. According to Hawley, the ending chapter will explore if “[David can] get back to some good place, or is he gone for good.”

Actors Harry Lloyd and Stephanie Corneliussen are set to guest star as David Haller’s (Dan Stevens) parents Professor X and Gabrielle, respectively.

Season 3 will premiere June 2019 on FX.

NEW MUTANTS

Shuler Donner said that she’s “hopeful” director and co-writer Josh Boone’s The New Mutants will see a theatrical release. The film is currently scheduled for August 2, 2019. “They worked hard on it,” she said. “I want to see it released (theatrically), I’d hate to see it thrown at Hulu.”

The sense of doubt comes from the fact that Disney will soon acquire 20th Century Fox this Summer. With DARK PHOENIX releasing in June, that film will come out just as the deal is finalizing, but with New Mutants it may fall upon Disney’s arms what happens to the project, whether they continue with theatrical or decide to go with streaming.

GAMBIT

The long in-development film’s fate will be at the mercy of Disney. It was last said that star Channing Tatum might’ve been looking into making his directorial debut with the film, but if it doesn’t fit within the Marvel Cinematic Universe plans, it might be done for. The same goes for the developing KITTY PRYDE, MULTIPLE MAN and DR. DOOM films.

THE PRODUCERS

Will Shuler Donner help Feige develop X-Men properties? “I don’t know, I don’t think so, certainly in name credits, it’s up to Kevin [Feige],” she said. The producer had recently taken a backseat of film projects, handing over many of the responsibilities to producer Simon Kinberg, while she focused on TV projects like Legion and THE GIFTED. “I don’t know what Kevin is thinking, I think he’s still dealing with the wealth of characters and trying to make sense of it all.”
