Entertainment Weekly features an inside look at director Simon Kinberg’s DARK PHOENIX in their 2019 Summer Movie Preview issue. Featured is a chat with Kinberg, including new photos from the film.

The first picture shows Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) attacking one of the many mysterious threats in the thrilling third act. The second image shows Professor X (James McAvoy), Red Lotus (Andrew Stehlin), Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Selene (Kota Eberhardt), Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and Storm (Alexandra Shipp) onboard a military train, ready to fight back.

Speaking of trains, Kinberg confirmed that production reshot the film’s final third act — which took place at the United Nations — for a more action-packed sequence involving the X-Men doing battle at a train crash site. There were also a couple space elements that seem to have been reconfigured for the final cut after feedback from early test screenings.

“I think the biggest challenge is modulating the film so that we have the big scale and visual-effects action that these movies require, but balancing that in a way that feels calibrated with the drama,” said Kinberg. “You have these big space sequences and trains flying through the air and people firing lightning bolts, but you also have a lot of emotional, four-page dramatic dialogue scenes.”
