Actress Sophie Turner spoke with The Associated Press (via USA Today) about tackling Marvel Comics’ iconic X-Men storyline in DARK PHOENIX, explaining what makes the film different from 2006’s The Last Stand.
“I just love the storyline so much of the Dark Phoenix,” said Turner. “I loved seeing Famke [Janssen’s] portrayal of Jean and I was kind of envious that she got to kind of explore that storyline, so I was really really excited to know that we were kinda going to do it over again. This time it’s not a subplot, it’s the main plot, so it really feels like we’re kind of doing that character and that storyline justice.”
On the similarities between Jean Grey and her other popular role as Sansa Stark on Game of Thrones, Turner says there’s not much to compare.
“Other than just being incredibly strong women who have gone through a lot, the similarities kind of end there,” she continues, “because as soon as Dark Phoenix starts, it’s on a different level to anything else I’ve ever done. The trauma that she goes through, the torment, the theme of abandonment is not something that Sansa has really experienced that much.”
Dark Phoenix flies into theaters on June 7, 2019.
