Simon Kinberg’s DARK PHOENIX directorial debut brought in $32.8 million during it’s first 3-day weekend in the USA box office, landing in the number two spot. That’s a very significant drop from the $65.8 million take X-Men: Apocalypse brought in back in 2016, making it the lowest opening for an X-film to date. At the time of this posting, the number currently sits at $39.2 million.
Despite positive reception from fans on social media, the film received one of the worst Rotten Tomatoes scores compared to any other film in the X-Men franchise with a shockingly low 23%. Audiences gave the film a more gracious 64% score, though Cinemascore polling did give it a “B-” compared to Apocalypse (A-), Days of Future Past (A) and First Class (B+).
Internationally, the film brought in a healthy $103.7 million, which brings it’s current worldwide total to $142.9 million. It had number one debuts in China, France, Mexico and Russia.
Dark Phoenix is rumored to have cost around $200 million with an additional $100-$150 million for worldwide promotion, although those numbers have not been confirmed by 20th Century Fox. Considering most genre films have a drop of 50% or more in their second week, it’s possible it may end up costing 20th Century Fox (now owned by The Walt Disney Company) a bit of cash.
