DEADPOOL 2 fans were shocked and saddened when Vanessa, Wade Wilson’s girlfriend played by Morena Baccarin, was killed at the beginning of the sequel. Some criticized the filmmakers for “fridging” her role; a term used for the act of killing off a supporting character to motive the main character. Baccarin, however, feels the act served its purpose to the overall story. Speaking with Comic Book while promoting her upcoming movie Greenland, the actress explained why she feels it ultimately worked out.
“I can understand that people felt that way and I certainly was disappointed that I didn’t have more to do, because I just loved the part so much,” she said. “But in watching the film and reading the script, it felt like such an emotionally pivotal role in the film and the entire arc of his character in the film is set into motion because of what happens to my character, that it felt that I was very involved in the movie even though I didn’t have a lot of scenes.”
Vanessa’s presence was definitely felt throughout the film and things were ultimately rectified by the end of it, much to the joy of fans. Now with Disney and Marvel Studios taking over the franchise, it’s unknown if any of the supporting cast will make a return for the sequel with star Ryan Reynolds. According to sources, future projects haven’t seen much development, if any. This also goes for the eventual X-MEN reboot.
