Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter at the premiere of Netflix’s The Electric State, directing team the Russo Brothers opened up about Marvel Studios’ hotly-anticipated Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. These two massive films are confirmed to shoot back-to-back for release in May 2026 and May 2027, respectively.
“I think we’re always looking for new faces, because there’s always new stories to tell,” said Russo (Joe), when asked about casting new MCU characters, which might include a number of X-Men. “I think these movies are gonna be a surprise to people. We found a way into the story that’s very exciting to us, but we think very radical. I think it’s gonna challenge audiences.”
Can’t wait to see what they cook up.
In related news, the Russo Brothers also spoke with Deadline about which characters are being lined up for both films. The original Fox X-Men have been steadily waiting since Patrick Stewart’s return as Professor X along with Kelsey Grammer’s Beast, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Dafne Keen’s Laura, along with Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool of course. But will they show up, or is it full steam ahead with the neXt iterations?
“Who knows? I don’t know. I don’t know who we’re gonna see. I still don’t know,” joked Russo (Joe). “If you close your eyes and use your imagination, you can see anyone you want. Whoever tickles your fancy,” said Russo (Anthony).
According to them, “anyone in the Marvel bag could show up in this movie.”
