Marvel and Sony’s next Spider-Man film, Brand New Day, just got a major dose of grit with the addition of Jon Bernthal. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor, best known for his portrayal of Frank Castle, aka the Punisher, will star alongside Tom Holland in the upcoming superhero feature directed by Shang-Chi’s Destin Daniel Cretton. Production is scheduled to begin in the U.K. this Summer, with a release date locked for July 31, 2026.

While the plot remains tightly under wraps, a few details have surfaced. Zendaya and Jacob Batalon will return as MJ and Ned, respectively, though the extent of their involvement is still unknown. New to the cast is Stranger Things star Sadie Sink in an undisclosed role. The story picks up after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Peter Parker was forced to erase his identity from the world’s memory to protect those he loves.

Online speculation has run wild, with rumors of numerous villains, ranging from street-level criminals to intergalactic threats, possibly appearing in the film. Some reports even suggest more than one version of the Hulk could show up. However, the inclusion of Bernthal’s Punisher hints at a storyline that may dive deeper into Marvel’s more grounded and violent corners – at least we hope!

Bernthal originally brought the Punisher to life in Netflix’s Daredevil series before headlining his own spin-off, which ran for two seasons. He recently reprised the role in Daredevil: Born Again, and Marvel has big plans for him going forward. Bernthal is set to star in season two of Born Again and is also working on a standalone Punisher project for Disney Plus.

What remains to be seen is how Bernthal’s intense, R-rated version of the Punisher will mesh with the often family-friendly tone of the Spider-Man films. Still, his presence could bring a fresh dynamic to Peter Parker’s evolving world—and possibly a few unexpected showdowns.
