While promoting The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige offered an exciting update on the highly anticipated X-Men reboot, set to be directed by Thunderbolts* helmer Jake Schreier. During a press roundtable, Feige opened up about the team’s vision for introducing the iconic mutants into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“There’s so much more to tap into,” Feige said, referencing the Marvel stories they have to draw from. “And there’s so many sagas within sagas for X-Men. That’s part of what we’re talking about now, which saga to grow and build, while doing the most important thing, which is introducing all of these characters and giving them their due in our first film.”

That emphasis on character introduction suggests the reboot will take its time assembling the beloved mutant ensemble, and giving each character their due. Feige’s comments also hint that Marvel Studios is carefully considering which of the X-Men’s many legendary arcs (The Dark Phoenix Saga to Inferno, God Loves, Man Kills, or even House of X) might be the right ones to build towards in the long term.

But what’s sure to delight fans even more is Feige’s second quote, where he reflects on his early days working on Fox’s original X-Men films and what he hopes to do differently this time around.

“We want to embrace that which was not embraced 25 years ago, when I was around on those early X-Men movies, which is those comic-accurate looks,” he said.

It’s a strong indication that the MCU’s take on the mutants will lean into the bold, colorful costumes fans know from decades of comic books, a contrast to the black leather suits that dominated the original film trilogy. The MCU has recently embraced more faithful costumes and looks for X-Men heroes like Professor X, Wolverine, Beast, and Gambit, so Feige’s commitment to comic-accurate designs for the mutant team fits that trend.

With Jake Schreier at the helm and the Marvel creative team mapping out a saga-driven approach, the X-Men are ready for a fresh start that honors their comic book roots while laying the groundwork for a new era in the MCU.
