Channing Tatum is officially bringing back his long-awaited role as Gambit, this time in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday (2026). After years of stops and starts with the character, including the collapse of a solo Gambit movie he once tried to co-direct, Tatum is finally getting his chance to fully embrace the roguish mutant on the biggest stage possible.
Tatum first suited up as the fan-favorite card-throwing mutant in last year’s Deadpool & Wolverine, sharing the screen with Jennifer Garner’s Elektra and Wesley Snipes’ Blade. But he admits Marvel had to take some convincing when it came to Gambit’s unique style. “They really had to wrap their mind around the accent and how people are going to understand him,” Tatum explained to Variety. His compromise: “I’m not gonna go full Cajun.”
Working under Avengers: Doomsday directors Anthony and Joe Russo, Tatum said the balance between humor and gravitas has been crucial. “They want things to be funny, but they don’t want to go full ‘Deadpool.’ They want to keep the drama and keep it tight. When Gambit gets serious, when he drops the Mardi Gras mask, things do matter.”
For Tatum, Gambit represents more than just another superhero role. “My singular focus was Gambit,” he says. “He likes women, he smokes, he drinks. He’s not just a save-the-world kind of guy. We need those, but we need contrast.” That complexity was a big part of why he never gave up on playing the character.
Still, the journey hasn’t been without its sacrifices. Reflecting on long shoots in London, Tatum admits it wasn’t an easy choice to step back into the Marvel spotlight. “My daughter’s here. Marvel’s never going to shoot anywhere here. Movies never shoot in America,” he says. He even asked Everly, his daughter, whether he should take the part. “I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do ‘Avengers,’ because I was going to have to be gone, but I was like, it’s OK. She’s going into middle school now.”
