Marvel Studios has officially released the first trailer and poster for its upcoming Disney+ series Wonder Man, giving us our first real look at what might be the MCU’s most self-aware and satirical project yet. The eight-episode series, which premieres on January 27 exclusively on Disney+, stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in the lead role, alongside Ben Kingsley, Demetrius Grosse, Lauren Glazier, and Byron Bowers.
The trailer introduces audiences to Simon Williams (played by Abdul-Mateen II), a struggling actor who finds himself stepping into a legendary role of a superhero, both figuratively and literally. The show plays with the idea of art imitating life, as Simon is cast to play Wonder Man in a fictional reboot film, only to discover that he may actually have superpowers himself. Set against the backdrop of a Hollywood obsessed with remakes and franchises, the series is a clever meta-narrative that appears to poke fun at the superhero genre itself, with Marvel turning the camera inward on its own universe.
In addition to Abdul-Mateen, Wonder Man brings back Ben Kingsley’s Trevor Slattery, the washed-up actor first introduced in Iron Man 3. Trevor appears to serve as both comic relief and a mentor figure to Simon, offering a look at how actors navigate relevance and reinvention in an industry that constantly moves on. Demetrius Grosse joins the cast, along with Lauren Glazier and Byron Bowers.
Behind the camera, the series is co-created by Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and Andrew Guest, who served as a producer on Hawkeye. According to Marvel, Wonder Man is set to explore a “new flavor” of storytelling within the MCU, one that leans into humor, emotion, and a healthy dose of satire. The format and structure, with shorter episodes (around 30 minutes) and a self-contained arc, make it an ideal entry point for viewers new & experienced alike.
This looks to be a unique addition to the Marvel canon, one that tackles timely topics. With a talented cast, an inventive premise, and a platform that allows it to take creative risks, the series has all the ingredients to become a standout in Marvel’s streaming lineup.
