X-Men Films And Superhero Entertainment News — Trailers, Industry Coverage, Reviews, Original Comics: SUPER (2025-), Mutant Fandom And More

With Avengers: Doomsday shaping up to be one of Marvel Studios’ most ambitious crossover events ever, excitement is already sky-high. The return of multiple legacy X-Men stars including Sir Patrick Stewart, Sir Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, Alan Cumming, and Kelsey Grammer signals that Marvel isn’t just dipping a toe into Fox’s mutant era, they’re diving in headfirst. For longtime fans who grew up with the original 2000s films, this isn’t just nostalgia bait, it’s a full-circle moment. But that’s exactly why the absence of a few key names could spark serious backlash.

Let’s be blunt: if Halle Berry’s Storm and Famke Janssen’s Jean Grey are missing, fans will riot.

Storm and Jean weren’t side characters or background mutants, they were the emotional backbone of the original trilogy. Berry’s Storm was a commanding presence, a weather-wielding team member (and leader) who brought both strength and heart to the team. Meanwhile, Janssen’s Jean Grey anchored the saga’s most iconic storyline, culminating in the devastating Dark Phoenix arc. These characters helped define what the X-Men meant on screen. Bringing back Magneto, Professor X, Cyclops, Beast, Nightcrawler, and Mystique without Storm or Jean feels like assembling the Avengers without Captain America or Thor… technically possible, but fundamentally incomplete.

There’s also the simple matter of fan expectations. If Doomsday is doing a nostalgia play, including the franchise that helped to start the modern superhero cinema (started by Blade and continued with Spider-Man) then leaving out two of its most recognizable heroines would feel less like a creative decision and more like a glaring omission. In a movie built on legacy and payoff, absence speaks louder than presence.

Anna Paquin’s Rogue sits in a slightly different category. Fans would absolutely love to see her return, and her exclusion would still sting, particularly with Channing Tatum’s Gambit in play. But there’s a layer of understanding if circumstances prevent it. Paquin has previously addressed her situation without going into details, and that is more sensitive and personal. She has expressed interest in portraying Rogue again, but if she isn’t able to participate, most fans would likely respond with empathy rather than outrage. Rogue is beloved, but real life always comes first, and the fandom respects that.

Still, the ideal scenario is obvious: Doomsday should be the ultimate mutant reunion. If Marvel is truly opening the multiverse floodgates and bringing back the Fox cast, this is the moment to go all in. Storm, Jean, and Rogue aren’t optional extras, they’re foundational pieces of the franchise’s DNA.

Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine is another major factor, though we already know he’s firmly under the Marvel Studios umbrella after his successful return in Deadpool & Wolverine. If he doesn’t appear in Doomsday, that would feel like another crime. That said, Avengers: Secret Wars could also serve as the perfect place for him to show up, alongside Berry, Janssen, and Paquin, if they have to sit out this round. We wouldn’t mind Shawn Ashmore, Elliot Page, and Daniel Cudmore either!

If Marvel wants cheers in the theater instead of online chaos, they know what they have to do: assemble the full X-Men team or prepare for the storm (pun intended).
