Alan Cumming is the subject of a new feature in InStyle, which takes a look at the actor’s dynamic life and evolving career. From his early theater days to blockbuster franchises and acclaimed television roles, the write-up highlights how Cumming has consistently carved out a space for himself as one of the industry’s most unapologetically authentic performers.

Of course, Marvel fans are especially interested in what he had to say about stepping back into the world of superheroes for Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday. Cumming reprises his role as Nightcrawler, the teleporting mutant he first portrayed in X2: X-Men United (2003). More than two decades later, the actor shared that rediscovering the character came through the physical demands of the role. “I got back into character through the physicality and the stunt people—the second unit stunt people are such geeks about the story,” said Cumming. “They were all so shocked I could even walk. Like, ‘Wow, you’re very limber.'”

He went on to describe the intense production process, revealing that he spent up to two hours each day in the hair and makeup chair transforming into the blue-skinned mutant. “I did it in a very concentrated way, and with massive amounts of green screen,” he explained. Cumming also offered a colorful description of the scale of the film itself, calling it “sort of superhero soup,” adding, “There’s millions of us and it’s like a superhero orgy.” It’s a vivid way of teasing just how massive and character-packed Doomsday is shaping up to be.

Perhaps most notably, Cumming hinted that this experience was far more enjoyable than his previous time in the superhero arena. “I really loved the director. I actually had a great time; I didn’t have a great time last time, even though I really liked the film,” he admitted.
