Sony Pictures is expanding its take on the popular Marvel anti-hero by launching development on its first animated feature centered on Venom. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio has enlisted directing duo Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, who recently revitalized the horror franchise with Final Destination: Bloodlines. The project is still in early development, with longtime franchise producers Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach expected to be involved, though formal deals have yet to be confirmed.
Tom Hardy, who portrayed Eddie Brock in the live-action trilogy, is reportedly connected to the animated film in some capacity. It remains uncertain whether he would return to voice the character or step behind the scenes as a producer. Hardy previously headlined three installments beginning with 2018’s Venom, followed by Venom: Let There Be Carnage and 2024’s Venom: The Last Dance. While the first film was a massive global success, the sequels experienced diminishing box office returns.
The Venom character was originally created by writer Bill Michelinie and artist Todd McFarlane, debuting in 1988’s Amazing Spider-Man No. 300 as a formidable adversary to Spider-Man before evolving into a fan-favorite anti-hero. He later received his own comic series and made his live-action debut in Spider-Man 3, directed by Sam Raimi, with Topher Grace portraying the character.
By shifting to animation, Sony looks to reinvigorate the property in the same way its animation division found acclaim with the Oscar-winning Spider-Verse films. However, the animated format requires significant time and resources, and with no screenwriter currently attached (though a writers room is being assembled) the project is likely years away from release.
