Marvel’s cinematic universe has long been defined by its ability to evolve, reinvent, and expand its storytelling boundaries. Now, as anticipation builds around the next phase of mutant storytelling, filmmaker Jake Schreier is offering a glimpse into a creative direction that aims to reenergize the franchise. While promoting Season 2 of Beef, Schreier remained careful not to disclose major details, but his comments to MovieWeb suggest an approach that leans heavily on reinvention rather than repetition.
At the heart of this new direction is a desire to reshape audience expectations. Schreier explained, “I would say that we are aiming to do something that feels like a fresh start and going for something that feels new. And, really, something that Kevin has pushed for is this idea of, ‘What can we do within this world?’”
Immersing himself in decades of source material, Schreier has revisited some of the most influential runs in X-Men comic history. From Chris Claremont’s foundational storytelling to Grant Morrison’s bold and unconventional contributions, the depth of inspiration is vast. This extensive research is less about adaptation and more about understanding the themes the X-Men have embodied over the years.
Schreier elaborated on this creative exploration, saying, “There’s so many different interesting takes within this world — and that shouldn’t be a clue as to anything, that’s just for background and just to live in the world and how deep that world is.” His emphasis makes it clear that the goal is not to signal a specific storyline, but rather to absorb the material in order to craft something that feels both authentic and uneXpected.
Perhaps most intriguing is the focus on uncovering unexplored corners of the X-Men universe. Schreier posed the question driving the project: “Just thinking about, ‘What are the corners of it? What are the sides of it that maybe haven’t been done so brilliantly in so many of these great movies that we can … [that] were areas that we can explore where it feels like we’re doing something new?’”
Ultimately, Schreier’s comments point to a creative philosophy rooted in curiosity and respect for the source material. By prioritizing discovery over nostalgia, the upcoming project has the potential to redefine what audiences expect from Marvel’s mutants.
