Ed Skrein: DEADPOOL represents the characters right.

Ed Skrein, who plays the villainous Ajax in DEADPOOL, recently spoke with Digital Spy about the film and how it differs from the current trend of comic book movies, which have become somewhat formulaic.

“It’s a lot edgier than the stuff that you’ll normally see,” he says. “That was a priority for us from the beginning. We’d been so blessed and we’re so lucky to have had all these superhero movies so far, but we possibly have become saturated by them so they’re possible coming formulaic. Also, they’re maybe not quite as faithful to the actual feeling that we had when we were 13 years old and reading comic books, like ‘I can’t believe he just chopped someone’s head off and said something like that, and then stabbed someone in the eye, and then ran off and did all this crazy stuff!'”

Staying true to the comics was the goal for director Tim Miller, star Ryan Reynolds and crew. Skrein says the representation is definitely as close to the  comics as you can get.

“In the movies they do some cool upper-cuts or some cool stuff, but it’s not representing the characters right, especially someone like Deadpool, who’s so irreverent and so violent. They don’t get represented like that most of the time, but we’ve done that. We’ve really done that, it was a priority for us from the beginning to do that, and it really feels like we’ve created the first post-modern Hollywood superhero movie.”

Anyone who knows the merc with a mouth know that comedy will play a major role in the film. Skrein says he’s excited to see which jokes make the cut, especially since many of them involve mentioning real-life people and properties from competing studios.

“The best part of this movie for me is going to be finding out which one of the options, the jokes from every scene we’ve done, is going to go in, because we had so many.

“We had Harry Styles, David Beckham, we had Prince Charles, we had so many! The funniest part was trying to keep a straight face. Ryan is such a comedic genius, and then people like [director] TJ Miller, who has a phenomenal sense of humor, they would make every take so different. We were so free in that aspect. I think it’s going to be a nightmare for the Fox lawyers and a nightmare in the edit, but wonderful for the viewer.”
