Michael Doughtery on making Apocalypse “relatable” and Jean Grey’s future.

Apocalypse - Concept Art

X2 co-writer Michael Dougherty spoke with IGN about reuniting with director Bryan Singer and writer Dan Harris to collaborate on the story for X-MEN: APOCALYPSE, which was written in screenplay form by Simon Kinberg.

He said it was interesting to explore a villain like Apocalypse who’s “literally such a giant character” when compared to Singer’s approach of making the X-Men films “as realistic and grounded as possible.” To make the character relatable, they had to find ways to make him “not just a big guy hellbent on world domination.” He comes from a time when mutants weren’t persecuted and praised as deities.

Hinting at at the future, Dougherty said that while he doesn’t know much about plans after this film, the groundwork has been laid and “once you introduce young Jean Grey, where do you think it’s going to go? It’s gotta go in some direction. That’s all I’m going to say.”

Thanks to ‘Antonio’ for the heads up!
